My Passat 130 TDI has a six speed manual box and I have noticed a few times in the past that it has been dificult to engage into gear but has cured itself within seconds however first thing this morning the car engaged into gear easily and drove normally for about half a mile then I could not get the car out of first gear without using both hands and I could only select gears 1 through to 4 for about another mile, then the gearbox returned to it's usual self. I've checked the Haynes manual and the Bentley Publishers web page and have no clue what the fault may be. According to the diagrams in the Haynes manual there appears to be a balljoint in the linkage would I be correct in assuming that perhaps this balljoint has become stiff and is locking the selector?

For anybody interested, the fault was caused by a worn out ball joint on the gear selector rod at the gear box end.

Ralph,
This has just started to happen to mine and I was dreading a replacement clutch - at only 45K miles!!. This seems to be a much cheaper fix. Can you tell me roughly how much it cost you?
Thanks,
Chips.
