I am going to drive further than Tescos for the first time since Christmas... just wondering how they're getting on with the M1 widening? Is it still hell-on-earth?

Yo may be sorry, but nowhere *near* as sorry as you'd be on a weekday!

I travel on part of the stretch affected by the roadworks at various times and on different days of the week.
Northbound seems to be flowing better than southbound most times from Junction 8, moving at or near the 50 mph limit, right to the end of the roadworks.
However, when I'm driving north I notice southbound is often a nightmare, with queues forming soon after Junction 10 and going on beyond Junction 8 - how far I'm not sure, as I live in Hemel Hempstead and join at 8 - always northbound.
I often cross the M1 on another road between Junction 8 and 7 and my observation is that southbound traffic at that point flows a bit better. Conversely, northbound coming up to Junction 8 can be bad, depending on the time of day.

I sometimes need to get to Luton airport, from the M25/M1 junction. I usually leave the M25 at Junc 21A and take the A 405 to St Albans and then the A1081 to the South side of Luton. You can always check the Highways Agency website and download Desktop Traffic Headlines for a live update on traffic

Yes, AS, that's a perfectly viable alternative, the only problem being you have to get (a) round St Albans and (b) through the middle of Harpenden. A further possibility is A405, then up the A5 to join the M1 at Junction 9, thus leaving St Albans sooner and avoiding Harpenden. Usually the M1 between Junctions 9 and 10 flows well.

Thanks for that CP! My luck usually means that I am going to Luton for a stupid o'clock check in or coming back from a 2300 landing ie the traffic doesn't tend to be as much a problem as staying awake!

I doubt you will have a problem on Saturday morning to be honest.

I have used the M1 southbound on several saturday mornings just recently and whilst it slowed down in places we kept moving. In fact I recently did my regular journey to visit family via this route in one of my best times ever and without pushing the speed limit. Barring unforeseen events I would not anticipate a problem. Avoid at rush hour if at all possible though!

I do J1-J8 and back at peak times every weekday and it isn't that bad on this stretch, prob 5-10 mins added to journey
