06 1.5dci Tyre damage - BobG

I managed to find a particularly deep pothole while on holiday which I think might have been enough to damage a front tyre. The wheel seems OK but I don't want to find a problem with the casing at 80mph on a French autoroute in a few weeks. Is there any way I can check it/ Will my local tyre fitters be able to tell me or should I simply replace it as a safety precaution?
