Go somewhere else to shop, buy services, do everything. That was my response to the London charge, as I barely clipped its corner while following an old route around the NW end. Haven't been to London since (only 25 miles away). They won't notice, of course, but if more people respond similarly in smaller cities then maybe the message will get through.

Just applied for my free bus pass so I can travel into Manchester at zero cost. Some consolation for reaching 60 eh!

It's a system to price poor people off the road and on to public transport. "Keep the roads clear for rich people" doesn't sound widely acceptable as congestion charge.

Another nail in the coffin of old, expensive, high-quality, human-scale city centre businesses. Another lakh of billions in the pockets of out-of-town hyper and supermarkets, those food-homogenizing, third-world-population-oppressing, cold-eyed-bureaucrat-run, planet-trashing, politician-bribing, citizen-scorning po-faced hypocritical monopolist carphounds...

Quite right Lud. Sadly though it seems that resistance is futile. We seem to have a population so brow beaten by bad news or perhaps worse, so apathetic that these grand schemes sail through without serious challenge.

Absolutely. Futile to swim against the tide of history except for artistic purposes.

But it's a good idea to retain some sort of idea of what's really what amid all the garish clamour, smoke, mirrors and threatening growls. No need to let the powers that be think we agree with everything or think the sun shines out of their diseased fundaments.

So have you signed the petiton and sent the link to all your contacts then? The authorities HAVE to demonstrate widespread popular support before implementing this daft scheme. Most MPs across the parties in the region have come out against it and three of the four local authorities involved have said no with a fourth holding a referendum.

This is NOT a done deal and can be stopped with popular support.

Get clicking before the end of the consulatation period runs out.
