For no particular reason, mine are:

Best. Toyota Celica. Just love its sleek looks.

Worst. Skoda Roomster. Just ugly, not even quirky ugly.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Alby Back
Alfa Brera at one end of the scale and Fiat Doblo at the other. Hard to believe that they are distantly related.

Would agree with 406
Worst - The current MINI Traveller/Estate THING.

Now or ever?

If it's current then the winner of the beauty pageant is the BMW Z4 coupe, miss knobbly knees prize goes to the Renault Vel Satis.

Actually...on reflection I'm being unfair to the Brera. I've just realised that I'm distantly related to my brother in law and he is one ugly son of a........... ;-)

Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Niallster
Lets keep it to current models.

The Vel Satis always made me think of a garden shed on wheels for some reason.

406 coupe is cute.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Lud
There's a white Fiat 500 up the road, whose offside has already been rubbed against something hard and red. Even so my wife agreed with me that it is quite cute in a chubby sort of way.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Optimist
Quite a few contenders for best so can't choose.

Worst: anything by Proton before they linked up with Lotus.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - DP
Another vote for the 406 coupe

I would also go with the Alfa 159, Citroen C4 and the Mercedes SL

Worst: Porsche Cayenne, MINI Traveller and Chrysler Crossfire

Best looking car for me...W215..MB CL500/55/600 year 2000 to 07. Not the SL, not the CLK, confusing isn't it, vast difference, and deffo not the facelift after 07.
Pity about the aluminium body corrosion, were going to replace the ageing 124 with one of those 2 years ago.

Worst current car, i've got me coat on, flak jacket too, and i'm off out...new shape Fabia, just too er..twee. Mind you the Mini traveller gives it some competition, and you pay through the nose to drive that...thing!

Agree wholly with Celica though, very pretty.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - stunorthants26
Best looking: Fiat Bravo is a fine looking car but id have to say an Alfa 159 or Brera for me. Also have a soft spot for the Volvo C30.
Spyker if money is no object, those cars are works of art!

Worst looking: Rodius is easily the winner here, its just priceless! Closely followed by Cit C1 ( looks like its melted in the sun, Aygo is so much better conceived ), Ford Ka with plastic bumpers ive never liked and id finish up with BMW 6-Series - the most expensive way into ugly car ownership.

All time best looker for me (sensible money) was Sunbeam Talbot, circa 1960. An absolute belter.

Which model? Alpine?
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Avant
Beautiful - Mercedes CLK convertible, or another vote for the Peugeot 406 coupe.

Pretty - Peugeot 205, especially the 5-door.

Ugly - Fiat Doblo, Toyota Yaris Verso, back end of current Renault Megane and current Honda Civic 5-door (it looks much better as a 3-door, although still with that silly spoiler)

Awkward - rear doors on 5-door Peugeot 206, 207, 307 and 308. Shape reminiscent of a Hillman Minx, circa 1960 - and the Hillman at least had a wrap-round rear window to help visibility.

Most beautiful of all time but not mass-produced - 1939 Lagonda drophead.

And an honourable mention for the Austin A40 Devon (1947-52) - a graceful shape and much better proportioned than the bulbous Somerset which succeeded it.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - b308
Can understand the 406 coupe, a lot of the coupes looked nice - the old Jags especially...

As for worst - I still don't like the BMW 1 series hatch - the Roomster I can live with, the back end's like that for a good reason, the 1 is just butt ugly.... in my eyes!! ;)
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - grumpyscot
Best - X type Jag

Worst - Mini Clubman (the BMW version)
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - s61sw
My current worst looker is the Mitsubishi Colt CZC Cabrio - definately a 'what the...' moment when I first saw one.

S6 1SW
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - DP
If we're talking coupes, and out-of-production models, I'd also add the original Vauxhall Calibra. A stunning piece of design before they wrecked it with the V-grille and chrome bolt ons. The car itself might have been a bit pants, but it looked amazing. The Fiat Coupe was also a pretty car. I also agree on the last Celica. A friend had a 190 in red with the Dynamic Pack and it was achingly pretty, if terminally unreliable.

Another idea for the worst - the BMW X3. From the side it always reminds me of one of those "bling" training shoes, for some reason. Hideous.

Cheers

An old Land Rover Defender crept up behind me at the lights yesterday. good, honest, work horse - farm and chickens- pig and dog- mud and sheep- cow and manure...

This one though had what looked like a gleaming stainless steel `Gerry` or `Po` (as me and my mates called them circa 1954.) It was fastened under the front diff.. Whether the driver could actually use it from the cab or whether it really was a Wehrmacht Helmet being stored there, for when times got hard on the School run, I don`t know.
On it passing, I noticed something similar under the rear diff, like an NHS bedpan. Is grease and diff oil so expensive it has to be caught and re-cycled these days?

There you have it, the best and the worst.. until that is, someone welds a commode onto the bonnet of their Bavarian in line straight six proletariat polisher.

Agree that the ugly award goes to Ssangyong Rodius.

Best looker at the moment is the BMW Z4 Coupe

Best -- Mercedes CLS, Jags - like all of them except the current S Type. Alfa 159 and Brera are stunning
Worst -- Rodius is just incredible. Was it designed by Homer Simpson and Stevie Wonder?
Merc R class is massive and plain ugly IMHO also.

Much more fun to re-visit the past, so

Of its time, the Hillman Imp; just as cute as the mini and smartly styled.
Humber Sceptre, a smaller XJS; with a real sense of occasion.
Citoren XM, better IMHO than the SM.
Honarable mention for the Pug 605.

The pits:
Anything Ssssanyyonnngg or however it's spelt.
The Merc van thingy that's supposed to be a 4x4.
BMW X6 as mentioned above - agree totally.
Datsun Sunny - the "winner".
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Lud
I didn't mind those early-70s Datsuns for their looks, and they were one of the first bread-and-butter cars with a five-speed gearbox. It was their steering that gave me the galloping horrors. Awful.

Since people have started mentioning non-mass-produced cars (although mass-produced is a flexible concept), I would just remind everyone that the Maserati Coupe closely followed by the Quattroporte are the most beautiful cars currently made, with no real rivals.

Lots of candidates for ugly, too many to choose from. It's a matter of taste. Two things: I have a soft spot for some ugly cars, if not quite all; and a lot of people think that all cars are ugly.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Glacier
Worst - Any current BMW
Best - Any previous BMW apart from the compacts (which will probably include the current BMW's when they become previous - if that makes sense)

Best of all time - Citroen DS
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Group B
Best looking current car: Alfa Brera
Worst looking current car: Rodius, of course, but there are many runners up. Subaru Tribeca B9 for instance.
I have a soft spot for some ugly cars

Me too. Take for instance an early 70s Pontiac Firebird; no bumper and the endura front with gaping holes for a grille. snipurl.com/2khuu [www_flickr_com]
Looks great IMHO but is it ugly or is it attractive in a brutal sort of way?

Interesting thread this and interesting that there are so many votes for the 406 Coupe, Brera and the Defender and so many against the Rhodius. This brings me to thoughts on why we like/dislike certain designs.

My suggestion is that designs which have a simple, clean outline, which reflect the intended use of the vehicle and which also subtly reflect its genetics are popular in the BR and of course vice versa.

Thus the 406 looks perfect for long european jaunts and reflects previous large Peugeot coupes BUT DOES NOT COPY THEM. Ditto the Brera. The Defender is of course the perfect iteration of a utility vehicle. Designs we dislike do none of these or confuse us with their intentions.

Thus my dislikes of current mass produced cars are the Audi Q7 and the Subaru Tribeca. Both disappointing given that they come from companies that can produce elegant or functional design and really "should know better". What are they for? Off road use?? Too big for urban use. Too thirsty for long distance.

For current likes I'll go with the 406 coupe and add the Alfa 147 (pre face lift). My blast from the past is the Fiat 850 coupe from late 60's. If you want an old ugly I suggest the Austin Atlantic, a design that was literally and metaphorically all over the place.

Best and worst looking mass produced cars - Lud
Never liked the looks of the Metropolitan, made here for a while with an Austin badge, but I love the snowmobile version. It's what the thing was designed for obviously, if there isn't a motor boat version.

I agree about the Austin Atlantic, late 40s hairdresser, yuck. Oddly enough the only person I have met who ever had one, a friend's mother, was a pre-war Hotchkiss owner (among other things) and when I knew her had Jag coupes and eventually a Lancia. I am told the Atlantic was the only convertible readily available when she resumed motoring around 1950, and she bought one in a fit of impatience. She crashed it on the A40 next to Northolt aerodrome ending up sideways over the central reservation. Not her fault I imagine. She was a proper car person and driver.

For me, the appeal of the 406 Coupe is that it looks exactly like a baby Ferrari, as you might expect from Pininfarina. Just a beautiful, elegant piece of design that hasn't dated at all. Like most Ferraris, in fact. They offered it in a sort of office highlighter yellow as well, and it still looked stunning. There aren't many cars that can carry off a colour like that.

If I could afford to run the V6, I'd have bought one a long time ago. The 2.0 version wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, unfortunately.

Just remembered the plethora of 1970s and '80s Yank Tanks too. Chevys, Dodge, Pontiacs, Cadillac, Lincoln, the whole lot -- wide, grinning, hideous grille looking like a bad accident with a large fire grate and a bed stead. Huge V8 engines capable of around 90MPH max and slow/lazy to boot. Under-engineering par excellence!

Interesting thread. I find this difficult. But among current mass market UK cars

Best: Jaguar S-Type, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Fiat 500. (Did I mention that I like retro?)

Worst: Peugeot 308, Renault Megane hatch, BMW 5-series.

Best: Jaguar S-Type Chrysler PT Cruiser Fiat 500. (Did I mention that I like retro?)

Mmmmm. The PT Cruiser, in hardtop, does have a certain ugly-duckness quality about it, but in ragtop form, especially with the hood down, it is my vote for the fugliest car about - horribly slab-sided.
Best and worst looking mass produced cars - morellomax
Best: VW Phaeton in Luna Blue with Omanyt alloys and anthracite and cream leather interior ! Better looking than the vulgar Bentleys it shares its oily bits with.

Worst: new Mondeo. Well it's not really, but it could have been so much better. How can a car so closely related to the S-Max look so much less coherent ?

Yes. You are quite right. I do apologise. I rarely see the convertible, so had momentarily forgotten its existence, but I do think that it looks truly horrible.

How strange that two so closely related cars - far more closely related than than the Doblo and the Alfa - could look so different.

They sold the hardtop in hundreds here, but the ragtop was discounted almost from the day it went on sale... My goodness, it is hideous. Just a slab-sided, fat-assed excuse of a vehicle.

Thinks - new thread maybe: ragtops/retractables, which ones look better/worse with the top up?

Best: the latest Lexus GS and LS models take some beating in the gracefulness stakes.
Golf MK 5, Ford Focus, the latest Mondeo and the previous Mondeo are also nice lookers.
The new Jaguar XF is a beauty too. For smaller cars I think the Ford Fiesta is plain but easy-on-the-eye. Alfa Romeos are spoiled by the clumsiness of those 'afterthought' offset number plates.

Ugly: Fiat 500 - if it handn't been for the original version, nobody would consider the current pastiche anything but ungainly. Nissan Micra - which ever way you look at it there isn't a single graceful line. Toyota Yaris Verso - looks like its made from panels taken from lots of different cars. Porsche Cayenne - odd how the VW Touareg looks neat but the Porsche sharing much of the bodywork looks ugly!
