Well done to the muppets at the Tyne Tunnel! Who thought it would be a good idea to close and cone off some of the toll booths?

Result = longer queues and slower traffic and those in the 'closed' lane then have to squeeze back into another lane.

I assume some consultant was paid 000s for this idea!

(before anyone mentions, no the toll booth isn't broken, its just been closed off!)

What do you expect from an authority that still charges motorbikes a 20p toll but the automated booths will not accept payment for, the biker has to press a button (after striping off to find his 20p) for someone to come and authorise the transaction.

That helps the flow of traffic no end too.

I know, I still have to laugh (despite myself) at the signs that say 'Here to deliver for you' right next to the signs that say 'no change given'. Very helpful. A backwards step from 6 months ago!

They do seem to be going out of their way north and southbound to increase the queue length by mucking about closing lanes.

Don't be surprised, if in the near future, the Local Authority come up with a report that says traffic conjestion has increased by x per cent, and the only way round it is to introduce a conjestion charge.

Oh don't - that so ridiculous it might well be true! Maybe thats why the traffic lights were changed on the Tyne bridge around 4 years ago, causing an increase in congestion overnight? And lo and behold, Newcastle are 'looking into' congestion charging....

Should possibly read 'Here to stand for you to deliver'.

I, unfortunately used the tunnel every day for over a year. The most stupid thing I have witnessed was the closing of a lane on the northbound approach in rush hour traffic. Cars in the left lane had to go through the truck lane and thus causing severe conjestion when merging.

When this lane is closed, it added 10-15 minutes onto my already 25-30 minute queue each morning. How much fuel does that use * 1000s of cars running at tickover!

Also, they have now closed the booth where you could pay with notes etc and have to stop and ask for change before you enter - again causing further delay in the queuing traffic behind that actually has the right change. Lunacy!! Goodness knows how much someone was paid to come up with these daft ideas!

I think i claim that title!! - the first and only time i've ever been to Newcastle and used the tunnel was last year, G.F was participating in the Great North Run, and although i managed to find the "start" somewhere in deepest Newcastle and drop her off, I had to make my way to South Shields to retrieve her. I happened to somehow get in the wrong lane as i entered the tunnel, then found i had no change, and had to run around nearby cars, and begged change for a "fiver". When i got through the cursed thing, there was so much traffic that i couldn't get across into the S.Shields lane and got forced around the roundabout and back through the tunnel to N.Castle! - whereby I voluntry went around the roundabout at that end, got into the right lane, and went back through the "horrible hole" and on to the pick-up point. Cost me £3 in tolls and a further £ 3.50 to park!!!
I told her "never again Lady" - so this year she did the 30mile Keswick to Barrow instead, which cost me almost as much!! - Charities! - Humbug!!

They do seem to be 'experimenting' a lot with lane closures and modifications. Is this just the usual anti-motorist tactic or is there an actual reason does anyone know?
