Anyone know what would cause an occasional misfiring in my 2.0 TDi Passatt - happens at about 1800RPM with light throttle at say 42 MPH in 4th gear or 30 in 3rd. I get a series of coughs until I change gear or boot it.
Tried new fuel, no dash lights, no apparent probs if I boot it through the revs. Happened every day now for the past week. 6K miles on clock.
Thanks.

VW fan. I reckon you will have more luck on the other section of the forum (technical matters). They are brilliant over there! On this one you'll just get people like me saying you have a problem with your thingammy wotsit.

The car needs scanning, even though the lights not lit on the dash faults will be stored, a code read is the way to go on this

This problem is becoming more common on the PD engines as they age. It's nearly always an intermittent connection to the injectors and can be fixed relatively cheaply by changing the wiring loom which connects the 4 injector sockets to the multiway plug on the "back" of the cylinder head. All of the wiring is inside the head (that's why it fails) but it is designed to come out fairly easily.
You should get the codes read first as has been suggested but diesel specialists know all about this problem.

Forgot to say my Passatt is a 57 reg and is 9 months old. Going to VW tomorrow for code scan but due to intermittent nature and exact revs required I am not sure if the problem will present itself. Under warranty so cost not an issue. I would rather not have the trial and error approach though.
It is the 140 without DPF.

Well - been to VW today. No fault codes logged.
ECU software updated although the dealer didn't know what the fixes were.
Performed road test (apparently) although no miles were added to the odometer from dropping off to picking up!
Will keep my eye on it - low revs seem smoother so I guess if it did get new software to fix low revs then the road test would not be required?

problem still intermittent. Any ideas?

"Any ideas?"
Yes they flashed the ECU by taking a laptop to the car and plugging it in. They didn't drive it, they probably didn't even start it. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't, but as a first stab it's quick and easy for them.
They are in "trial and error" mode, good luck.
Make a note of every contact, mileage readings etc etc. so you are prepared if you need to put pressure on.

Never did take car to VW again. Instead went on long, slow drive and 3 weeks later and nearly 700 miles it has not recurred. Suspect a lot of short journeys didn't help at the time.
However - I can recommend the new ECU software - much much better drive now.

I don't believe this ! Have exactly the same problem with my passat, almost freaked me out reading it! Has anyone found a solution to this problem yet? Mine is with VW now for the 3rd time to get this sorted, but all i'm told is computer says no!

This problem is discused across on www.vwaudiforum.co.uk and there being no fault codes but the harness being replaced fixing the problem. Regards Peter

Thanks Peter D, have had a look but can't seem to find it there. What's the thread title?

VW Fan here (I think I have a new ID)
Well - warranty has now ended and the problem has recently got significantly worse. When outside air temp is warm and engine cold there is a dreadful misfire. VW tech seem to suggest it isn't injecting diesel for a few hundredths of a second which goes on for a few miles until the engine is warm. Dealer says I need to drive it harder but it is still coughing when I drive like I stole it.
I am thinking this is the air temp causing the problem. Anyone have experience with the manifold air temp sensor or engine temp sensor?
Getting rid in 4 months so hopefully it will keep going until then.
Any ideas? Mileage is 24000, 57reg 2007 2.0TDI PD 140

Did they fit a new injector cable harness. Regards Peter

Nothing has been changed. Dealer says a number of Passat/Touareg are doing this.
Engine is fine first thing in the morning on the way to work (cool air temp).
Problem occurs when outside air temp is about 20 deg C (lunchtime/going home) and engine is about 2 miles into warming up. After warm up it is fine and for the first 2 miles are OK. So problem is after about 2 miles until the engine warms up (as ECU works around injection map).
Dealer reckons the ECU map cant handle the conditions I drive it in. The ECU has never recorded a fault code except when a glowplug gave in.
I usually feed it Shell vPower diesel.

You need to post this on www.vwaudiforum.co.uk in the correct section. Regards Peter
