I'm planning holidays in Edinburgh with my Mrs and she wants us to hire a car even though I've no problem with driving my Mazda 323 TD to and from Edinburgh. I'm looking for a small hatch (Focus Astra size) diesel but all the websites I've visited seem to offer only petrol cars or at least this is what they've advertised!
I've never hired a car on my own so would really appreciate any advise possible.
Thanks a lot.

I hope people aren't ignoring me here :-)
Me and Mrs are thinking of flying to Inverness and then hiring a car from there and driving down home. Are there many car rental places who'll do such a thing?

One way car hire is extortionately expensive.
What's the advantage in hiring a diesel for such a short time, esp. with diesel 12p/l more expensive?
It'd be cheaper to fly to Inverness, buy a cheapy, pay for RAC cover, drive home and sell it on Ebay!

You normally hire a car of a particular size and get what they have. So it could be a diesel or petrol and you won't know what make it is before you collect it. Some companies might favour say Vauxhall but that is no guarantee.
When I get hire cars when mines in the garage I've had petrols and diesels. It basically depends but petrol will be more common because you normally get lower spec cars (i.e. base models) which are cheaper to buy and therefore will often be petrol. When diesels might have been at a premium they might have got diesels to sell on after 6 months at a premium but that probably isn't the case anymore.
I'm not sure how much difference a diesel will make in terms of fuel costs for your trip but since you have a diesel already you probably want one due to the slightly different driving styles.

With Hertz you can hire from their Green collection which will be either a hybrid or diesel - they claim that the booking will be 'car specific' - however, the Green collection didn't seem to be available from Inverness airport (at least for the days I checked). Hertz charge a £35 fee to drop at a different location - around £130 for a week with a 1.4/1.6 hatchback + drop fee and various other charges. National have similar rates and fees. I'd recommend trawling through of couple websites to see what is on offer. But be sure you check all the fees and taxes because at first glance the daily/weekly rates can look quite attractive but when you get the final bill it will be a different matter. If going with Hertz always take the Fuel Purchase Option - that way, if you hand it back with a full tank it will not be charged but if, for any reason, you forget or don't have the chance to fill it up then you will not be completely ripped off for fuel.
I get rental cars almost every week. My preference would be Hertz every time - their prices are, generally, on a par with other big-name providers and no-one (in my own experience) has beaten them on service.

Thanks a lot for providing me such useful information, it'll definitely help me out when I'll be hiring a car. Thank you :)

Why does it have to be diesel?

I have always found what appear to be unbeatable prices thru ???.travelsupermarket.com. I can hire a Hertz car thru them for less than Hertz themselves charge, usually!
