Good morning
I may have to drive Edinburgh to Inverness next month departing around 5pm. What's the A9 like - is it an easy drive or am I likely to get stuck behind refigerator lorries on double white lines?

Watch out for the numerous cameras.

This is a road not to rush. Trucks can be a problem, and if you dont know the road be careful of the switches between dual and single carriageways. Many head on accidents have been caused by people forgetting or not realising they are back on a single road. There are speed cameras at th end of some dual sections just inside the lower speed limit. Having said that, a pleasent drive if you are not in a hurry.

Have they moved Dundee? Route to to Inverness from Edinburgh is M90-A9. Dundee was on the A90 Edinburgh / Abedeen road last time I was there.

You will certainly see a lot of that fabulous Scottish scenery...:-)

Make safety your mantra on this road. Not speed. If you do get stuck behind some lorries ask yourself what is more important to you: losing a few minutes or losing your life.
The A9 death toll is sombre reading.

What they said. The A9 is one of the most beautiful drives in Scotland. It also has either the first or second highest death toll. I think the A77 still beats it, but it's a close-run thing...

A77 is still claiming lives. Too soon to be statistically significant, but I get the impression that the introduction of average speed cameras over the stretch from Bogend Toll to south of Girvan is reducing the number of serious accidents, but inevitably not stopping them all together. (I drive on that stretch almost every day)

A lot depends on what day you are travelling. I used to live in the Hghlands, therefore used the A9 a lot (at least as far as Aviemore). IIRC, Friday evenings tended to be heavy northbound around teatime, but apart from that, never found it too bad. The fact is many trucks will hold a steady speed close to the speed limit, so there's no pressing need to pass them. Caravans can be a pain though (and although I don't own one, I don't typically tend to criticise them). Problem usually arises when a caravan is being pulled by a vehicle that's not up to the job.

Thanks for the info - it'll be midweek so hopefully quiet once away from Edinburgh commuter area.

Drove the A9 yesterday evening s/b, rounding Inverness at around 18:00. Absolutely delightful run at near M/way speeds all the way to the M80 at Dunblane. Less fun going north on Friday 23 May when it had its share of trucks and tractors.
Agree with others about the need for care with dual/single sections and farm track etc crossings.
