Well, It is a long drive and he would have to return. I would say 650 Euros.

The conference organisers put me in touch with a taxi firm who quoted me 740 Euros in total for both trips and so I checked on the web and found prices of £800.
I'm therefore hiring a car for 6 days for £157 so with petrol and tolls let's say £210 which makes the cost of labour for a 90 odd minute journey about £150 each way. The flight with taxes was £100 return.
Weird economics.....
The train is no use to me landing at 10pm on a Sunday I'm afraid.

It's 172 km one-way by Google maps. Works out to about ?2/km, which I guess is not bad, given that the return leg is totally dead time.
Guess flights UK to Marseilles were more expensive?

No direct flights to Marseilles and were also about three to four times the price.

I don't suppose the taxi driver had a white 406 with interesting modifications?

15 years ago I think we paid (or rather SWMBOs company) £60 from Nice to Cannes.
Mind you it was £5.50 for a small beer, and £18 to use the beach at the hotel we were staying in (off season)
The posh bits of the south of France are for the very rich or very stupid (or both)

In the early 90s, Nice Airport to Monaco was about £50. The chopper ride was cheaper if just one of you was travelling.
Once travelled from Marseille to Monaco by train (via Nice). This was very cheap and beautiful ride IIRC.

Classic quote by taxi driver in the south of France when discussing why we needed to book 2 hours in advance
"there is not a shortage of taxis, there are too many customers"

Sitting here at Nice Airport wating for my flight (the joys of the dongle...)
I might have been flashed on the autoroute back - I only saw one flash and I'd say I was going about 9km/h over the limit (110kmh on that stretch) the car in front was going a fair bit faster and was probably c.75m in front of me.
Any know if the French cameras give you any leeway above the limit and if they flash once or twice - it was one of those big front facing ones.
