Anyone know if it is OK to spray Cellulose top coat directly over etching primer or should a Cellulose primer go in between?

It's many years since I used an etching primer and I can't recall for sure whether a cellulose primer should be used on top of it. But I would do this anyway, for three reasons:
1. It guarantees that the top coat will 'take' without problems.
2. It gives a thicker coat that will allow the flatting that you ought to do before you top-coat (I doubt if your etching primer has enough body in it to allow more than a very light flatting).
3. The primer is usually a 'primer filler' and this should fill any small dimples in the etch primer that might not be seen until too late if you go straight for the top coat.

Andrew. Years ago, when we were preparing an aluminium bodied Formula Ford for a meeting at Brands Hatch, to save some time we sprayed the finish colour straight onto an etching primer coat. In this case, we had all sorts of problems with the top coat losing it's adhesion and it could be pulled off in strips. When we later took all the paint off and sprayed etching primer/cellulose primer/top coat, there were no further problems.
The problem could, of course, have been caused by other factors, not least our primitive equipment and premises etc but, my advice would be to put a normal primer onto the etching primer.

All those weeks at the car restoration course come back to me now. Yes, first etching primer, then primer/filler and finally top coat. Check the products are compatible when you buy them.

Thats 100% for primer/filler on top of the etching primer. Thats what it will be then! Strange I've done loads of spraying and never considered it before, but then I've rarely been down to large areas of bare metal and used etching primer..
Thanks for your replies.
