Hello

My t reg astra has failed its mot on the cat, rusted exhaust mount and brake pipes, i have been quoted 700 - 900 by 2 garages and dont think the car is worth this.... it has general wear and tear, 78000, not full service history, not had a cambelt change etc.

Anyway i've been offered 200 ( by one of the garages) and really dont know what to do. I dont expect much but cant help feeling that i am going to make someone a big profit or should i be grateful for this?

Probably unfortunate but true.

If you have had 2 or 3 quotes all around the same area (it does sound expensive though so I would get another quote) then you have to decide if its worth doing or not?

If not then to sell for the best price you can get is the right coursew of action.

Obviously if a trader buys it he is looking to make a profit.

Get another quote 1st, from a small trader.

This is a couple of hundred quids worth of work at most for someone with a welder and a bit of DIY skill, or indeed someone in the trade. £100 for the cat, £10 for some brake pipe, plus labour/welding.

If you can't get the work done any cheaper, and you decide to sell it, I would pop it on Ebay, complete with a full description of the fail list. All you need is a couple of people who can get the work done cheap (or do it themselves) into a bidding war, and you'll easily beat £200. In fairness, assuming a £200 fix, it's a cheap car at twice that price.

£600 is a cheap 78,000 mile T-reg Astra.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies it helps.

The problem i have is that i keep being told that the cat will be 400 plus, dont know why.

Unless it is otherwise an excellent car I'd bung it on ebay with a detailed decription and get rid. There are plenty of good cars out there with a year's ticket for what you'll spend on it.

What engine size is it?

its a 1.6 8v, tried 4 places and they all quoted 400 to 478 just on the part, think it must be gold plated!

These have a close coupled cat fitted, and the cat is integral with the exhaust manifold. It's no wonder that they are a bit expensive.

I've no idea if these people are any good:-

Assuming yours has a 'maniverter' - tallies with NC's description - then the dearest one is 190 quid plus VAT.

edit: apart from the one that's 220 quid. D'oh.

Incidentally, did it fail because of the mechanical condition of the cat., or on emissions? if it's the latter there are a myriad of possibilities other than the cat. at fault.

you would have to check your engine code but

it failed on emissions but has been tested by vauxhall to check and come back on the cat. They said the manifold was part of it so it makes sense. thankyou for the link i will look.
