I went past a strange camera tonight and unluckily for me i was probably doing about 10 or 12mph over the limit in a 50 after overtaking a tractor.

I probably didnt slow back down in time.

Anyway, the camera i have never seen before. An unmarked completly normal VW passat was parked up just off the road ahead. It was parked side ways and the drivers window down and facing me oncoming.

Outside the drivers window was a tripod and a small device on the top, seemed to have a case on it with a thick blue strip on the side or the device itself had a blue strip but it wasn't very big; didnt look much bigger than a normal digital camcorder really.

Anyone any ideas what this might have been and if it could have been a speed device capable of recording me and auto issuing a NIP?

Cheers,

Sounds more like a DVLA camera, I've seen them in Vectra estates and Berlingo type vans parked in lay-bys with the camera on a tripod outside, although they usually have a sign or an LED scrolling message telling you they're checking for road tax.

I'd second the DVLA vote - I've seen them about, they usually have a little illuminated sign and are manned by pairs of blokes who look like they failed the 'charm' part of the entry course for bouncer school.
As, unlike proper ANPR traps, there aren't hordes of BiB hiding round the corner, I wonder what the point is ?

ANPR ?

Excise checker DVLA?

LA Percentile speed survey ?

Sneaky Speed camera?

Could be anything from what you say.

If you are the Reg Keeper of the vehicle driven then if you have not had 'The Envelope' on or before 30th May 2008 then it wasn't No. 4 above.

If it filmed you passing the tractor then you are in a position to argue. But perhaps the operator saw the overtake and realised you hadn't done anything wrong.

Hope you are all right anyway. I hate people being done for merely exceeding a limit imposed by people who may know nothing about driving.

Never had points so its new to me so will see what happens.

Not sure what to think as it was an unmarked car AND a VW Passat estate. Never even seen a VW police car before.

Also do the laser things work on bends as this was a v.long left hand bend. Where i was traveling and where it was parked there was hardly a straight bit of road in the line of sight.

It was right next to a railway too so maybe he was filming that.

Clutching at straws really as i like to keep a clean license and dont purposely speed.

TBH sounds more like a vehicle survey camera, get them quite a lot recently.

And anyway, if the worst comes to the worst OS, look at it like this: most people lose their virginity sooner or later and you will be in perfectly respectable company. Nor will a small thumbmark for technical speeding lose you any job requiring a driving licence. Not the sort you'd want anyway.

Just seen my first DVLA tax camera - sounds like that's what you saw too.

Oo-er... what next, an income tax camera?

How would that work?

Easy-peasy.

Access your name and address from DVLA and compare that with income on returns from HMRC database and NI database for you at that address or worse still no income at all.

Elderly banger - no problem; big 4 by 4 or somesuch - big problem.

"Oo-er... what next an income tax camera? How would that work?"

Already in the planning stage.

It takes a reading of your speed, multiplies that by the emissions/km number, multiplies that by the value of your car to the nearest £1000, and that number is then multiplies by your marginal tax rate. You'll be randomly checked at least once per year, and the highest reading will pertain for the year. It'll be automatically put it on your self-assessment form.

Don't believe me - just wait. It'll happen.
