No, that's not a typo.

British police are looking into acquiring the new Caparo T1 (£250,000) as a quick response unit.

Yes, this is the car that recently burnt Jason Plato whn he tested it on 5th Gear, and was plagued with problems when Jeremy Clarkson tested it on Top Gear.

Going on its reliability to date, I don't think joyriders will have much to worry about.

Surely a helicopter would be a better idea and no more expensive?

4 months max before someone is killed after that things smashes into the back of them at 170mph on the motorway.

Indeed a helicopter would be a much better idea.

Can someone give me the reasons FOR acquiring these as opposed to other cars, helicopters, cameras etc? (though a helicopter must be more expensive? but has many other advantages)

Man will walk on mars before this is acquired by a British Police force.

I think its a bit of a joke !

Surely, PU, given the site it's on.

Sussex (?) have had a Lotus (I think) for PR and recruitment stands for ages though, so it could be something like that. Anything to draw people to your stand, and engage teenage boys - get them looking at the car and hit them with safe driving advice, that kind of thing?

will never happen

imagine that involved in a box maneuver to bring the car to a halt. Crazy.

I originally saw the article in my daily paper. The link I posted was the first one that popped up when I used google news for the search.

The newspaper mentioned "Now the Metropolitan Police are looking to use it as a rapid response vehicle to react to 999 calls after the car was given the all-clear to be used on UK roads. A police source said: The Caparo would ensure officers can get to the scene of a crime faster. It?s certainly something we?ll be looking at getting.?

Watch Police Interceptors tonight. They have things like Impreza's and Evo's.

I do wonder whether this vehicle is the right thing for the police though. Is there anything it can do that an Impreza can't? Although I suppose it could be partly to scare the other drivers. Somebody with an Impreza may try to outrun an Impreza, but there probably aren't many drivers that would consider outrunning that thing.

Wait a minute, is it a one seater? I think Police advanced drivers always drive in pairs, one to drive and one to do the radio etc. I can't see somebody doing 150mph in it while talking on their radio.

Very little that's any use to the police. On the other hand a real car like an Impreza or Evo can do a lot of things that it can't. Like contain four or five people for example. And go down farm tracks and over speed bumps and through chicanes and so on.

Just a bit - MD Explorer as used but many police forces would set you back about USD 3.5M plus say another million or so for the fancy imaging gear etc. Quite a lot of money to catch teenage yobs running away from stolen cars which seems to be the main use if the TV police videos programmes are any guide

Someone's leg is being pulled.

I shoot with (not at !) a Police Business Manager and based on his recent moans, I doubt that any Force in the country would be able to justify that sort of money. Its a leg pull.

a number of us bleat on about how inappropriate the current range of diesel vehicles are.. and it's always budget constraints that are the problem ... so this is total pie in the sky
