Yes, they are a private company charging someone else for your info. If you ignore it, they send increasingly intelligence-insulting letters making out that they are are government officials and quoting irrelevant extracts of Acts of Parliament, until they give up, if they just sent a nice letter and postage paid envelope it would be OK - maybe they do this these days?

yes they give a pre paid envelope

reply with a note stating that there will be a charge for the information they request and see what response you get

If they've provided a SAE then what is the problem? OK, so make a charge, but I presume you want to buy a clocked car?

By being awkward all you are doing is making it easier for people to clock cars. Does anyone seriously think that is a good idea?

In V5 document, there is a space for filling up mileage when selling the car.
However, this field is an optional one.

Mileage verification is not always accurate!

You have no way of knowing whether the mileage on the car you sold was accurate anyway. I never fill in that section for exactly that reason.

what concerns me, is should the guy i sold it too have clocked it, would i end up having to go court and give evidence

Computerised MoT solved this problem.

Computerised MOT's are fine up to a point but you'd be surprised how many (mainly private) cars lose a few miles before their first MOT or lose a few each year beforehand.

It is also very, very easy to get an MOT without the tester ever seeing the car.

"very, very easy" - How?

pd - If it is that easy, do tell how, please.

There is no requirement in the MOT test to have a mileage recorder.
The speedometer is also not checked to see if it is working.

The problem computerised MoT solved was how to get a regular checking of mileage, which is what the thread title asked, and as such HPI shouldn't have to chase for last known mileage anymore. Most people won't remember anyway.
There is no requirement in the MOT test to have a mileage recorder.

Then for those vehicles there is no problem to solve.
The speedometer is also not checked to see if it is working.

Of course the car could have been clocked for every MoT or the speedo hasn't worked for years, but in that case no matter how far HPI dig they will never find out what the true mileage should be.
