91 1.8 GTI 8V - thrust bearing trouble! - kirklander73
Hello Again! another problem with my GTI. this time i am being told that the thrust bearing has been destroyed by a cheap clutch that was fitted about 2 months ago (along with a recon box) i unerstand that the gearbox is "back to front" with the thrust bearing at the end of the box. But how the heck is what these people say possible????
is it a con? or just a straight bearing replacement?
Oh and the box had been leaking oil from the end plate.
ANY HELP GRATEFULLY RECIEVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AAARGH! now they say that to replace the thrust bearing (the reason it got towed in the first place)would be a waste of time unless the entire clutch is replaced. apparently it would destroy it in short order, the annoying thing is that both clutch and bearing were replaced 2months ago!!!! supposed to be a VW specialist too!!

Did they recommend a proper new clutch at the time kirklander? If they just fitted a thrust bearing and pressure plate leaving the old clutch assembly in place, without advising a new assembly, they are in dereliction of their duty as VW specialists and owe you a contribution. If on the other hand they recommended a new clutch and you overruled them for reasons of price, it's your fault. If they fitted a cheapo aftermarket assembly that has failed, tell them to get the money back from the suppliers and fit an OE-quality assembly.

Just how heavy is this clutch?? Release bearings on these are not the usual flimsy things and aren't going to wear out that fast.

Are they sure it's the bearing and not the rod gone through the plate?

Yes it was a proper clutch fitted,i got it myself from GSF. the clutch pedal is as it allways felt like, not too heavy nor light if that makes sense, when it "went" it sounded like a washer full of stones, it still went into gear but i didn't try to drive for fear of causing more damage.
I wish i had kept my old hunter now just wanted something more of a modern classic.....

OOPS sorry screwloose, yes they have said that both clutch and bearing need replacement...

Nothing's making any sense here. If it's not some super-heavy-duty clutch plate; then how is it wearing the bearing?

Nor can i(!) its a standard run of the mill clutch from GSF i got the thrust bearing from there too. They now say it is possibly because i either have been racing or riding the clutch..................(!) i do neither.

If a new clutch assembly was fitted, then either the unit is defective or some error was made in the fitting. Only disassembly will make things clear. How very annoying kirklander.

Some models of Mk11 used a self adjusting clutch pedal which can cause a hole to be made through the clutch release plate by the pushrod. The Mk 111 self adjusting clutch cable is far worse in this respect. The release bearing is very easy to replace, I didn't even have to lift the car.

Just bad luck this one! i had to agree to the garage fixing the car (it broke down miles away from home) and they gave me the remains of the clutch(!!) quite literally smashed to pieces, the thrust bearing the same- split nearly in two. either this is genuine or i have been taken for a ride. i am returning the cluch parts to GSF and will let everyone know what they think.

thanks to everyone who has helped!!!!!

kirklander i had a simular problem on my g reg 16 valve golf. On this one the pressure plate was held on by a large circular clip with a solid disc type thing which the push rod engaged on every time you press the pedal. it turned out that the clip wasnt up to the job and it slipped causing the rod to push down the side of the pressure plate and then damaged the relaese bearing and eventually getting no gears what so ever. The company was german and sweedish. I sent the parts back but they could find nothing wrong. When i eventaully put another clutch in the car i got the plate and clip assembled spot on and welded it with 3 welds about 10 mm. That was done 4 years ago. The car still going strong on the same cluth.

Sounds "highly unusual."

had a closer look at this clutch..... looks like it hasbeen set upon with a ball pein hammer!! compared it to one that was replaced on my MK1 and this one is much smaller..?? called the garage and they replied that it had been done when they removed the clutch..... so acting stupid i said that it loked like they droped the gearbox on it.... to this he replied that the clutch can (And was) changed without removing the gearbox!!!!!!!!!!! this was thier so called "Time served and VAG trained mechanic" talking pink fluffy dice taking this to trading standards me thinks................................
