Is there a rough guide as to what type of links are allowed, or not, as the case may be?

ie, are newspaper item links a no-no, but television news item links ok?
Link etiquette - zookeeper
i dont think the mods let you use links if the site contains offensive language in the text and the like, but some do get through tho
Link etiquette - XantKing
Quite curious about this as well, seeing as the link to the driving supplement of a newspaper website was snipped in the VED thread today - seemed a bit odd given that links to other motoring journalism sites seem allowed. Is there a list somewhere of which non-offensive motoring websites are considered unacceptable - and, dare I ask, why?

I'm aware of that, but it seems that some motoring journalism sites are OK, some are not - there's nothing in the sticky up the top there about specific titles being banned, it just says make links to rival sites non-clickable. Don't see the harm in listing them there if they are, would save on a bit of moderating, surely?
Link etiquette - SlidingPillar
Ah but think, does HJ want to give free links to his rivals?

I'd not in his position. The paying adverts pay for this site etc.
Link etiquette - bathtub tom
Don't worry about it. Leave it to the mods. They've nothing better to do ;>)
Link etiquette - Pugugly
No. As many links as possible are checked - Any links that have any offensive images or words (basically anything that would be edited from a post on this forum) will be removed or made non-clickable as will any clickable links to "the other broadsheet" are automatically blocked by the swearfilter - the reasons are self evident and if you search the forum there is detail on this.

Link etiquette is explained in this link.

Mods decisions are final but we are a tolerant lot (apparently)

One thing that gets on my personal wick is not using the TimyURL service. Really gets on my wick.

PU,

If I understood how to use it, I probably would, but my grasp of most things internet is less than firm.

try this ifihelps. and this link is an example ;)

tinyurl.com/2h8x25

PU,

Managed to create a tiny link, but it doesn't appear 'clickable'....

tinyurl.com/u7ayo

M'thinks I'll stick to composing my own replies.

Edit.

PS It does appear clickable when it goes onto the messageboard.

Beam me up, Scotty.

I can't get onto tinyurl at the moment - blocked by Zone Alarm even if I click on "continue to blocked site". There was a post in another thread saying how to avoid this - but I did not understand it! Can someone give me a step by step guide as to how to set up Zone Alarm so can get on tinyurl?
Thanks in advance
Phil

Phil, try snipurl?

"Phil, try snipurl?"
Thanks PG

Phil,

If using Internet Explorer, then click on "view" at the top, then on "toolbars" and then remove the tick next to "zonealarm spy blocker"

This toolbar is more trouble than it's worth. The above should disable it.
Link etiquette - PhilW
Thanks DD - it didn't actually seem to work but I went to control panel and uninstalled it - can now get tinyurl!

Phil

Get the Zone Alarm main window open (double click on the symbol) and go to Identity Protection. Right-click on the TinyURL row and click Add.

It's a pain and needs re-doing after installing updates.

>>PU says

It can also get on my wick.
It is not explained in the welcome page, but long links screw the page display for us peasants with less than 24"? ( screens). The effect is we have to scroll left/right as the display goes wider than normal.

Tinyurl also hids the true site and keeps the suspense :-)

Link etiquette - oilrag
what happens if you just enter something like (for example)

` gordon utube 10p `and write "paste that into Google ?

if it has a motoring context such as the 10p tax rate affecting the motoring habits of the poor, such as myself.

Oilrag, that would be a link of the tenuous variety, and would probably get canned.

The reason we try and make links to sites non-clickable sometimes is because a lot of people access the site from work and have very sensitive browsing filters. If you're not concentrating it's very easy to just click on a link posted here and end up at a site that trips the filter.

So, if you're linking to a site where the language isn't as restrained as here, or the adverts are likely to cause a stir, please take the http:// off the front of the link and add a note explaining.

Thanks

I can understand the reasons for links with dodgy content getting the boot or made non-clicky, but I'm still not clear about this "the other broadsheet" business - a link to one such paper in another thread today wasn't just made non-clickable, it was removed altogether, with a note that links to that publication weren't allowed.

Like I said, there's nothing in the sticky about posting rules to suggest that specific newspaper websites are banned. I'm no fan of the publication in question, am just wondering if it's only that specific one that isn't allowed to be posted, and if so, shouldn't this be put in the sticky to stop people posting links to it in the first place?

Just seems a bit odd that the link which replaced it was to the website of a TV news station owned by the same fella!
Link etiquette - Dynamic Dave
In short, HJ doesn't allow links to The Times. Whether they are clickable, non clickable, or posted as tinyurl /snipurl etc links.

I thought there was a past explanation as to why, but a forum search failed to find it. I have the explanation communicated to me by email but before I go ahead and post it, I had better obtain permission.

::EDIT::

OK, permission obtained:-

The Times is a competitor to The Telegraph, and The Telegraph is the foundation stone of this website.

"Tinyurl also hides the true site and keeps the suspense "....and may lead you where you don't want to go; best to check the status bar at the bottom before clicking.

Lots of newspapers are competitors of the DT, and so are TV stations.
Links to other motoring forums seem to be allowed, and they are surely the most directly competitive of all.

Oh well, I don't actually care. HJ can set whatever restrictions he likes. It's a jolly good forum, and long may it continue.
Link etiquette - jbif
Hint. HJ writes for the Daily Telegraph.

The hint I gave in the 4th post on this thread seems not to have been enough of a clue.

It is self-evident that the Telegraph and this web site are very closely linked and indeed the two have web links interlinked on their pages.

Pugugly's attempt to make it quite clear [ "links to "the other broadsheet" are automatically blocked by the swearfilter - the reasons are self evident "] also seems to have passed people by.

The key words used by the legal mind there were "the other broadsheet". Singular "broadsheet". NOT plural "broadsheets".

There is only one competitor to the Telegraph.

Oh dear - famous last words, like There is no ice, said the captain of the Titanic.

All newspapers face all sorts of competition, and not just from fellow broadsheet(s).

But as I said, it doesn't matter. It's HJ's forum. If he wanted to ban links to Yorkie bars (motoring relevance quickly dragged in) for example, that's fine.
Link etiquette - drbe
The afore mentioned competitor is a tabloid - certainly not a broadsheet. Surely.
