Does anyone know where the diagnostic plug is on a 1.9 gti and what it looks like?

That's a long time ago; but, if it's got one, I think it's a 2-pin female AMP plug on a loose spur from the ECU.
What on earth have you got that will read it?

I`ve got a code reader from draper. What is an amp plug? and what colour is it?

A Draper code reader for a Bosch LE-2??? I'll be gobsmacked if it'll do it. Or is yours Motronic 1.3? [DKZ engine?]
An AMP plug is the most common make of injection connectors - squarish with wire locking clips. See the whole engine loom for various examples - it may be green?

The last models of the 205 1.6 were fitted with single point injection and a catalyst.These have a 2-pin Amp diag socket located by the o/s suspension turret.I have never seen a diag socket on a Gti.However there is a 3-pin socket that is usually clipped onto the cam box cover that is used to set up the ignition timing.hth
