Do they ever get taken down? In my experience 'new' lasts forever.

If you are new to the area yourself would you know or care about a "New Layout"?
|
They are supposed to be taken down within six months (maybe 3 months, memory fades) of the opening of the Works. The trouble is that people simply forget.
When preparing the Contract Documents it is very easy to forget to include an item for taking down the sign. The Contractor will have left the site at the end of construction and unless the Engineer chases him the sign tends to be left in place.

Not only those signs-there used to be a "POLICE-ACCIDENT"sign on the verge of the A2 just outside Dover-it sat there for three months to my knowledge.Must have been passed by countless police vehicles who could not be bothered to collect or even report it.

There was a sign near us:-
"Temporary Road Surface"
With an addition below:-
"Permanent Sign"
