Have had this Mk2 golf for 9 years and 70k of its 160k miles. Generally fine car, but some problems with the Pierburg carburettor, and it has always had trouble starting after overnight heavy rain - especially in the last two days!
Plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm seem ok (and been changed several times in 9 years). Breakerless ignition - I still don't really see where the spark comes from! Is there an electronic box somewhere that could be getting damp? Under the cracked plastic cover over the wiper motor? Should I risk cracking it up more to investigate?
Can anyone help?

There is a TCI-H ignition switch unit on a heat sink under your cracked plastic cover. This area gets full of leaves and water, check the drain holes are clear. You can get a much stronger plastic cover from VW, but if I remember correctly it is not cheap.
