You dont mention which engine it is -Honda or Rover? Sometimes you can be lucky if the belt has only skipped one tooth and the timing has very slightly been thrown out which will lead to running problems only. Really all depends on how badly its jumped and if its enough for the pistons to have made contact with the valves.

Have you took it back to the garage that did the head gasket? A compression test will be a good start to determine if there is any internal damage or indeed its just a case of a new cambelt/tensioner etc.

was done by the person selling it ,turned out to be a bit of a cowboy,he picked it up
fixed it up then sold it on ,the joys of ebay

I would get a compression test done and then once you have the results, go from there.

If theres no damage, £150 should see a new belt and tensioner done at a trusted garage, maybe worth getting the waterpump done as well for another £40 or so as any future leaks means having to do the whole job again.

Where in the country are you? If its just a case of putting on a cambelt/tensioner then it will be less than 200 quid, even at an xpart dealer. There are a lot of independant MG/Rover garages springing up so there is bound to be one close by.

How can they quote £700 when they dont know what work needs doing!

That's what's known in the trade as a "Forget it!" quote.

[Although it's a fair guess; bent valves on a K-series will be around that sort of money.]

Have you put the plug leads back on in the correct order? Next time you change the plugs, do one at a time. Less confusion that way.
