I wonder if any of you could help with a question of mine?
Could somebody clarify if the 1781cc, 1984cc petrol and 1896cc TD 4 cylinder engines (not as we know them now just from the beginning) used in VAG group cars for many years were VW or Audi designed engines or simply group efforts?

Also this post made me think of an episode of Top Gear where Clarkson describes a certain Porsche having an engine from a VW van.
Anyone know what engine he meant?!

The Porsche 924 had an engine lifted straight from a 2-ltr VW LT van. The power was up slightly; but it was otherwise identical to the injected unit used in the LT ambulance.
[In those days white van man didn't usually get fuel injection.]
