bought car last year 02 38000 miles on clock no mot problems made aware of have only done about 4000 miles in first year but failed on mot can you tell me how long the following should last on this car
n/f/b disc excessively worn
o/f/b disc excessively worn
o/f/ front constant velocity joint gaiter insecurely mounted to its housing
n/f track rod end ball joint has excessive play
o/f/track end ball joint has excessive play
n/r (axle) suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush
o/r (axle bush) suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush
what do think after just 4000 miles

Hi macian, welcome to the Back Room.
Whilst I imagine you did not expect this after only 4000 miles of ownership, it doesn't sound too bad to me.
Discs wear out, 42,000 sounds about right.
CV gaiter is loose. Sounds cheap and easy to fix.
Did you not find your steering was a bit slack? Track rods on potholed roads wear out.
Suspension bush wear - this would make the car vague on the straight, did you not notice this or a clicking or clunking noise going over bumps etc? Again, potholes and speed bumps are the culprit.
If you think this is bad just ask a Land Rover owner about bushes and track rods!
Can you get a second opinion? Where did the car live before you got it, and where are you? (City or countryside?)
|
Speed bumpses, maybe? Floor it between bumps, stamp on the brakes, and bounce over. Rinse and repeat. Can't believe we still have them in 2008.

hi billy
thanks for replying
will get second opinion as garage that done mot was where i bought it they want nearly £800 for fixing
countryside mostly driving dont no much about noises from car but noticed it now that you mention about steering
|
Is it me or is it odd that the supplying garage has now MOT'd it again and want £800 quid?
Whilsts its perfectly possible that stuff can wear out under "normal" circumstances, and particularly so if they are common Laguna fail points, and further, that the MOT in this case is very genuine and justified in picking these things up, It feels (or smells!!) wrong.
Are you thinking that the car wasnt 100 percent when you bought it and now the garage is wanting to profit twice from you? Its not beyond the realm of fantasy that the MOT you got with the car on buying it was passed on the items its now failed on because of that wonderfull clause "in the testers opinion" they were "ok at the time of testing" That'd save the garage a few bob when trying to sell on a car......
However there is no proof and it cant be proved. You'll have to swallow any bills yourself I'm afraid. If the car has been failed then any other garage will see that its failed on those points via the MOT database the testers have access to.
I wonder if there is a moral. Ask who MOTs the cars when buying?Outside job or inside job?
I would take the car away for a second MOT elsewhere and not give them the satisfaction.

Hi. I have a renault laguna 1.8 16v privelege 2002, hatchback, done 27848 miles. The air bag light and service sometimes shows. It also has a rattling sound when idling (like a diesel car). If anyone has some ideas, please HELP!!!
Ossy IN CREWE.

Are you very, very, sure that 38,000 miles was correct...?
Full service history with the car....?
|
All common Renault laguna problems if its the rear subframe/suspension bushes then this could be quite expensive to have done although with the correct tools its quite easy to do if you can lift the car.
|
You've been very unlucky there.
None of it is especially serious but potentially ball-kickingly expensive if you do need all that work done.
And to think that my cheap little Hyundai Accent just sailed through each MOT...

One of the technicians where I work bought a diesel Laguna (he wanted something torquey to tow his caravan). It was a very tidy low-mileage example from a main dealer. The car went wrong so frequently that it has become a coffee break joke to ask him what the fault is each week. The car seems staggeringly unreliable. Strangely he is remarkably calm about the whole business and just keeps taking it for repair! I would have smashed it apart with my bare hands by now.
