2003 2.0 litre CDT(131bhp)-New Key Program problem - tonypreston
Having lost a key, I ordered a replacement and booked in for programming with a respected ex Rover dealer in W. Yorks. Upon arrival at garage my remote worked, my window switches worked, my heated rear screen switch worked etc.

After an hour or so the techie. came in and announced 'your remote doesn't work, both existing key AND new key.' In addition, the electric window switches on drivers door had reversed ( drivers operated passenger and vice versa) and the heated rear screen switch remained on. I staed that all was OK when I arrived and this was confirmed by the gent at reception who had driven my car into the workshop.

The techie. insisted that nothing he had done could have caused these problems and that the receiver unit behind the dash was faulty. Another bloke stated that water may have entered a relay or control unit. Despite my protestations that I felt tehe garage was responsible for the faults, I was obliged to pay £171.00 for the privilege of a new key and manual locking etc.

Has anyone heard of this or had a similar problem. If so what is the solution (cost effective if possible).

Yes, I appreciate that it would have been cheaper NOT to get a new key. Yet another lesson learnt.

Help please.

whilst there are those that have nothing but praise for rover 75's as I have said many a time before the electrics are a nightmare. They really do suffer horrendous water ingress problems in & around the wiring for the ECU & EWS unit. They also suffer water ingress in the ABS interface caused by water travelling up the n/s/f ABS sensor causing the harness to rot.
It does sound like iether the ZC's codes have become corrupted or when they have tried to configure the remotes its all gone wrong.
Have they got T4 diagnostic gear & are they competent in using it? T4 will tell them what the problem is unless water ingress is bad inwhich case it will fail comms. The key has to be proggrammed to the EWS module but the module can only take a certain no of keys. It may need a new EWS module with key's which have to be ordered from germany via Xpart
The reciver units are a known issue & there are modifications where an areial is fitted as the original unit used the crash bar that it was mounted on as an ariel. I will look through my Rover notes but I would look for a specialist that has a fully working T4 that knows how to use it. If the ZC's codes are corrupted new ones have to be generated with a checksum digit & this is done by a specialsit so expect to be without wheels for a day or two. I am confident it can be fixed
Have a look in the Plenum chamber under the bonnet where the ECU sits & look for a water tide mark! if there is one expect to be shocked with problems.

Thanks for the info Doc. I have booked car into a local Xpart group workshop (Preston) who have 'full diagnostics' and will carry out full checks.
However, they weren't prepared to state that the original garage ( also Xpart group) might have cocked up the key programming!

I shall be checking all the water ingress areas shortly. I'm now prepared to be shocked.

Watch this space.

Thanks again.

Ah, ZCS code mismatches on the 75 will cause you no end of problems - we had a 75CDT that had cruise and traction control in our workshop a few years ago - an incorrect diagnostic disc was used and corrupted the coding - some very severe head scratching and a set of new codes from MG Rover and all was well.

Quite how you'd get hold of any ZCS coding from the now-defunct MG Rover is beyond me......

I am able to report that my local Rover specialist diagnosed a knackered BCU/body control unit. They advised that they might not be able to reprogram the two remote keys as I did not have the bar code info for either key.

I gave them the go ahead and am pleased to say that, not only are the electrics/electronics working again, but both remote keys were successfully programmed.

Total cost of diagnostics and repairs in the region of £235. Not as much as I expected. Luckily I am covered by a twelve month Hondacare warranty and have just had confirmation that my outlay will be reimbursed.

Thanks all for the tech advice and comment.
