How practical is an Audi S4 avant? - bartsimpson
I test drove a b6, but thinking about maybe a b7 - does anyone know what the difference is, and are they child-friendly?

Smaller than a W203 C-class, about the same size as a 3-series. Whether they are 'child-friendly' will depend how big you want/need. I remember Dad had an early Mk1 3.0 GXL Capri and shoehorned me and 2 elder brothers in the back. Not child-friendly, but Dad-friendly, especially after he had a Piper Cam fitted!

A photographer acquaintance of mine got one to replace his elderly Saab 900 when it finally gave up. He could fit all his photography gear in the back of his Saab but couldn't fit his tripod bags in the boot of the Audi. He also had a lot of trouble with it in the first few months including leaking fuel lines which required replacement of both tanks.

My A3 Sportback is more than adequate for 2 adults and our 2 year old daughter. An A4 should be more than enough, but an S4 may not be child friendly if you decide to drive it to it's potential and you end up with a child throwing up all over the interior!

Funnily enough I've just moved "up" from an A3 Sportback, but to an A6 Avant. We have two young kids but actually didn't really need the vastly additional boot space to accomodate all their stuff (we're quite frugal in what we cart around and I don't hold much truck with the notion that kids = lots of clobber). Rather we wanted more rear passenger space - something the current A4 Avant doesn't offer over the A3 SB - so on longer journeys Mrs T doesn't end up with her seat right forward.

New A4 looks to have much improved rear seat room over previous version but I understand the Avant version doesn't come out until end of 2008, so wasn't any good for me (company car change). If you're after the A4 for family use then might be worth hanging on for the new Avant.

But this is the B8 you are talking about not the B6/7 ???

They are a very practical car, and as someone has pointed out slightly smaller than the Merc equivalent, but bigger load carrying than the BMW I think. I,ve had the B6 and B7 and think that the B6 is slightly better in some ways although they improved the handling in the B7 somewhat.

The main overiding thing about the Audi is that it is virtually impossible to tell you are driving an estate, which isn't the case with the BMW and probably the Merc also.
