Removing polish from black vinyl trim - Mazda-Man
Hi guys - I'm sure this has come up before but couldn't find anything via the forum search, so can anyone tell me how to remove some polish which has marked the black exterior vinyl trim on my wife's car? I don't know what polish was used and have tried 'Back to Black' on small area which helps but doesn't remove all traces.

Much obliged!

Lighter fuel and a rag.

try vinegar or (my favourite) Jif lemon ! Just a little on a lint free cloth and rub in. You may find you need back to black or equivilant after if the trim has been previously coated.

black shoe polish. Won't remove it but it will hide it and make the black vinyl look good.

Always black the plastic before you polish the car. Meths and Lighter fluid will strip the lubricants form the palstic use white spirit. Regards Peter

As a professional id say leave the chemicals, they shouldnt be needed.
Try a microfibre cloth with a bit of spit, has never failed me yet.

Did someone suggest peanut butter?

Once yo've removed the traces just polish the trim with some Mr. Sheen and a dry cloth, it works a treat and seems to last for a while, I did my Mondeo B-Pillar trim the other day and I don't think that's been touched for years, it's looking nice now.

And when SWMBO brushes against it with her white / cream coat?

You're in big trouble, boy!

Just use a normal rubber pencil eraser. This will remove the chalky residue no problem.

I once used peanut tter on black bumpers and it gave a good shine. However, I don't think it was worth it as it made quite a mess when polishing off. I think it gave a good shine due to the oil contained in the jar.

1/04?

Don't use crunchie but just smooth peanut butter as you may scratch the paintwork ;)

Boot polish does work though - old valet/chauffeurs trick that one.

true, but if you rub well it seems to clean the surface and leave nothing to wipe off :-)

Well I tried the microfibre cloth with white spirit today and got most of the wax residue off albeit using quite a lot of elbow grease. The slightly grained surface of the black trim strips didn't help matters any so I might try a soft brush to remove the last remnants then think about restoring the black colour.

I second Autoglym Bumper Care - IIRC it specifically mentions this purpose on the label.

Bit pricey but it will last for years plus it doesn't rinse off at the first sight of rain like other "Bumper & trim waxes"

Be careful using any sort of solvents - you may bleach the black plastic.

Toothbrush. Ideal for scrubbing little areas and getting residue polish out of little crevices along plastics and rubber.

As long as its not your own! :-)
