Advice please. I need to get to an area of Bristol called Clifton, near the Clifton Bridge obviously, arriving about 10am! Sat Nav etc suggest going off the M5 at J 15, onto the M4, down the M32 and right thru the middle of Bristol. It appears to be possible to turn off the M5 at Junction 18 and go down the West bank of the river on the A4. Any thoughts or input from Bristol residents, or people with local knowledge, would be appreciated.

Or off the M5 at jct 17 and straight across the downs and past the zoo... Clifton will be signposted if I remember right.

Thanks Lud - that looks like a good compromise and the signposts will be a bonus!

Born and bred in Bristol - so here goes!
1) Don't ever go down the M32 during the weekday morning rush hour
2) M5/J18 (Avonmouth exit) is direct - but the traffic does tailback at the end of the A4 where 2 lanes change to 1 bus lane and 1 unrestricted lane. Can be about a 1 mile queue sometimes, but it does move.
3) Lud has it about right. Exit M5 at J17 (by a large Asda) , keeping to the right on the slip road exit. Keep straight on - signposted Bristol West - you will pass a large BMW/MINI/Porsche dealership and although you may encounter a queue for the second roundabout after the BMW site it does move quickly. Keep straight on at both roundabouts and after half a mile the road becomes single carriagway.
Straight on through approx 4 sets of lights (plus additonal pelican crossing lights) and after going up a medium steep hill flanked by large residential housing watch out for a truevelo type speed camera (30 mph limit) as the road levels out.
Approx half a mile after the camera the road passes through the Durdham Downs area (large green open space either side of the road). Still keeping straight on go forward over the first roundabout and on (about half a mile) to a gyratory
*If you want Clifton Village - keep in the right lane and follow signs for Bristol Zoo, take the second (I think) left after the Zoo - just before the road drops down a hill - but this will be signposted "Clifton Suspension Bridge". This will take you to to the centre of the "village".
*However the wider Clifton district takes in BBC Bristol, University, etc and for these areas you would need to go straight at the gyratory (following Blackboy Hill, and Whiteladies Road).
It's about 20 minutes from Motorway exit to either of the above.
If you reply with the street name you want I can let you know exactly.

Thanks Jacks - I think you must be a Bristol taxi driver! I am actually going to Caledonia Place, BS8 4DJ

My daughter lives in Clifton and we always follow the J17 route that Jacks has advised.
Follow his instructions for Clifton Village if you are going to Caledonia Place and allow plenty of time if you need to find a parking space - it's like trying to park in chelsea!
|
Thank you all very much! I had been briefed on the parking situation, like non-parking! This has all been very helpful! I was toying with using the Park and Ride scheme but I guess they go to the City centre which won't really help me - I imagine one can't get off en route?

not a taxi driver although it feels like it - ferrying around teenage sons/girlfriends etc.
Caledonia Place is very close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
Follow my directions to Clifton Village, and then follow the signs to the bridge and then just before you hit the bridge bear left, down the slope passing a large hotel on your right and look for a left turn into Caledonia Place. If you don't have parking arranged at your destination - and it's a nice day - maybe you will find somewhere around Christchuch' Do a googlemap and Christchuch is where Clifton Down meets Clifton Down Road.

:-) Yes there has been some protest from the PC brigade about these old street names!
But a couple of years ago the City Council appologised on behalf of the City for their past role in the slave trade,
So now - everythings allright !

The names have nothing to do with the slave trade. According to an eminent black local historian, the first relates to King Charles II and the second to the local nunnery where they wore white habits.
Even I listen to Radio 4 occassionally.

From Bristol City museum website;
There are several local myths about the Blackboy Hill, a popular name for the top part of Whiteladies Road. One myth has it that slaves were auctioned here, another states that the hill was where black servants came together when they were not working. One local myth has it that there was once a stone at the top of the hill marking the site of local slave sales. There is no written records to support this. There is also a myth that tells of a black servant who worked in The White House at the top of Blackboy Hill. The hill may well be named after the public house situated there, called Blackboy Inn. The origins of the hill's name are unclear.

On an old AA map I looked at today Black Boy Hill seemed to have been censored altogether - it is the upper extension of Whiteladies Road.

A final thank you I think. This site is soooooooo good! Less than 2 hours from asking a question I have a raft of useful information plus hot tips from the locals and I am sorted apart from the parking! I shall hope to go on a nice day and use Park and Walk!

Armitage,
Would that be Shanks' pony?

Indeed it would but first I shall need re-shoeing! What a fun thread this has been!

Jacks - thank very much; your directions and route description were spot on! I got to Caledonia Place and by great good fortune found someone just leaving so I got a parking place as well! A great result!

Glad you had a good journey,
