05 Which Gear Oil - vin
The handbook states GL4 75/90 gear oil for my Lancer '05, however I can only find GL5 75/90 gear oil.

Is this a more modern version of the GL4 or are they 2 separate oils even though the viscosity is the same?

Will it hurt to use GL5, does anyone know the difference between the 2?

Thanks in advance,
Vin

off the top of my head, gl5 can be used in place of gl4 in most applications.

I have it in my mind though that there is a difference to do with sulphates? and possible corrosion of some metals.

But that will be enough to prompt an expert into correcting me!

Possibly, the additives in GL5 can attack the materials used in some, particularly Japanese, gearboxes. I would stick to using GL4 as per the handbook.

Castrol TAF-X is a 75W-90 GL4 gear oil. Castrol SMX-S is a 75W-85 GL4 gear oil.
So you could try one of those.
I would not use GL5, it does something to the metals, as has been said before.
