How are they held in?
Injectors stuck - smuggler
No idea how they are held in.. Had it to engineers and they have Tried heating them and and got pullers from dealership and they are not budging. Now hearing this is common fault and you have to damage head to get them out Thanks

Year? Exact type of engine and what has been tried?

As per SL's posting.

remove the head and take it to your engine rebuild company and get them to boil it in cleaning fluid for a couple of days you will then be able to tap them out from the other side
has the main pump broken up?

Thanks i will pass thet on to the engineers.. Pump not broken

>>engineers

I suspect you might really mean mechanics, fitters, or technicians.

NC - I read recently on another forum:

A Technician makes things work, an Engineer knows how they work, a
Scientist knows why they work

Its a 2001 2.9 Cdi...{now added to header} Been in engineers and they have tried everything they have in there to release them including heating them and all different kind of pulling

It's a common rail diesel - it needs a magician :-)

What is wrong with the car/ why do you need them out? Does the engine run?
Injectors stuck - Screwloose

Build a leak-proof containment round them, fill it with Coke and leave them to soak overnight.

There is a special hydraulic puller for removing them; you remove the solenoid and screw an adaptor into the main body.

Engine runs and overheating .. Checked everything and looks like head Gasket

The mechanics could not get them out so took them to an engineering company who deal with all sorts off engines and are completely stuck with this one

if the head is coming off anyway then i would boil it. The last one i did i used the proper puller, coke you name it nothing would shift 2 of them we even had one attached to an engine crane and virtually lifted the car

If it is the head gasket, why do you need to get the injectors out? (excuse my ignorance).

Maybe can't skim the head with them still in? Don't know - never seen a head off one of those - though my friend's '55' plate (20K miles) is allready on it's 2nd fuel pump.

Well, I know this isn't a particularly classy or subtle suggestion, but, the reason I asked how the injectors were held in higher up in the thread was that if possible, I would try slackening the retainer a bit, and then running the engine. The sudden pressure rise in the cylinder, and the background vibration and transient thermal stressing might loosen the injectors a bit.

NC, you and I are on the same track - what I was wondering was the possibility of, if your suggestion didn't work, and knowing the exact size of the combustion chamber at tdc, introducing a tiny measured amount of engine oil (e.g. 10% of chamber) into the cylinder via the glow plug hole using a syringe. Then repeating until the injector cracked out. This would progressively increase the compression ratio until something would give, preferrably the injector and not anything else!

But since the head is now off (and anyway compression was inadequate due to hg failure) this remains but an idle speculation.

Has anybody used this method (successfully or otherwise)?

we actually broke one injector in two using a made up adapter and the engine crane it nearly lifted the vehicle off the floor
what would worry me is would the injecter give or the con rod
