Adding wax polish layers - Dave N
Does this work, or do the solvents in the second layer just remove the first layer?

hi,

i'd imagine it depends on the type of polish, i used to be a fan of maguires which comes in a 3 step process. 1. cleaner which to be honest is a mild form of t-cut. 2. polish and followed by the 3rd coat of pure wax. Similar auto glym have an extra gloss protection which is supposd to be applied after the normal resin auto glym.

i personally tend to wax more frequently but in single coats and build up the potection that way, i had read somewhere that the protective coating takes a while to harden and as you say polishing over it again may remove some of the first polish. Mainly because when you give it a good polish and get the grime off its easier kept that way instead of letting it get really bad and starting from scratch, plus hate the swirl marks when the sun hits the panels especially on dark colours.

Ive tried most polishes on the market but now tend to stick with the autoglym, its easy to put on, take off especially this time of year when the temp maybe isn't great for polishing and removes swirls easily. Saying this it dosent last as long as others byt if using frequently dosent really matter

I'm not sure if it works, but I can quote from experience.

Before I had a wife and kids to run around after, I used to wash and wax my car every weekend. This meant that the car would get around a 100 layers of wax a year - but the car wasn't noticably larger!

However, the odd parking scrape (other drivers, not me!) on the bumpers would rub out easily as they were just in the wax rather than the paint.

I always use AutoGlym products, and have never had any complaint about the quality of the finish. If anything, regular waxing seems to make dirt just drop off, making washing easier!

polish wont layer...polish is usualy an abrasive cleaner used to sort out faded or swirled paint

some waxes and sealants will layer somewhat, 2 -3 coats will ensure even coverage but dont go thinking you can build a thick layer similar to a clear coat

One layer of the slightly abrasive Autoglym Super Resin polish and several layers of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection is the answer. The latter will protect the former and obviate the need for frequent applications of the polish. There are similar products from other sources, I'm sure.

You want to be careful how much polish you put onto polished wood. Too much and it becomes smeary.

Surely you're not talking about a car, are you?
