Hi all
Today whan starting my wifes 106 1.5 diesel the alternator belt snapped, i got a price for a new one from my local autosave which was about £8.00 but i don't think its a job i can do myself, does anyone know how long it should take and a rough cost of fitting as my local garages around here aren't the most honest. and my usual garae is to far to drive the car to.
Many thanks

The book time for the job is 30 minutes. They're a bit tight to get at and you'll need a selection of the right tools.
How far away is your usual garage? Do you have access to a battery charger where you are?

Thanks for the quick reply screwloose, my usual garage is about 50 miles away and i do have access to a charger

Hmmmm; in daylight, you should just about make it on a fully-charged battery. What sort of time would that trip take?
|
it ususally takes me about 1 hr 15 mins as its on some back twisty roads, do you need the battery for a diesel to run? as i thought as long as it started then you were ok, obvisouly i would have limited electrics etc

The belt on these cars is straightforward enough to fit - but a bit tight to get at. You need a 6 mm Hex key for the locking bolts and a 13 AF spanner for the tensioner jacking bolt.
You would have no trouble at all with a daylight run to your chosen garage if your battery is half decent and charged, but I would suggest getting a belt properly fitted locally if at all possible.
On the TUD 5 as with many engines, there is a torsional vibration damper incorporated into the crankshaft pulley. For this damper to be effective, it has to "see" a mass (in this case, the alternator rotating system) at its free end. I'm pretty sure that last time I went in there to change a cambelt, I saw a notice cast into the pulley saying "do not operate without belt fitted" or words to that effect.
The effect of torsional oscillations in a crankshaft can be very severe and it would be a great pity to wreck a perfectly good engine for the sake of a drive belt.

Thanks very much for the info 659, i woudn't want to jepordise my engine for the sake of an alternator belt. i will see if i can find someone decent locally to do it rather than chance it.
