Please can anyone help? i recently bought a 99 plate mondeo zetec.. and never thought to try and unlock the car with the key in the door,, as ive allways used the keyfob,,,, but for some reason i tried the key in the door and it wont unlock.... the only way to unlock the doors is with the button on the keyfob...... but it works fine to lock the doors with the key in the door.... it just wont unlock,,,
any ideas what might cause this please?

Prolonged lack of use - the curse of remote fobs. Try a lot of WD40 and a bit of time.

the wierd thing is there doesent even seem to meet any resistance.. it just turns to full right with nothing in the way...
Admittedly i have no idea how the locks work in these things.. weather its magnetic or electrical or the old barrel kind of thing.... but i feel a definite resistance when i lock it,,,, just nothing when i try to unlock....

Hi mate, dont know if this is any help. I have just the same problem. I could only unlock and lock the car with the remote key. Then the battery went flat and the alarm locked on. All sorts of problems. Both my front doors are like yours. When you turn the key to unlock, there is nothing there, no spring resistance at all. So, if you take off the door card to gain access to the inside. You can look up at the back of the key tumbler. On the end is a square looking piece of metal that turns with the key. Put your key in the tumbler and put a spanner on the square. Turn both at the same time. With car and persistance you should get the tumbler moving. Mine worked for a while but I think the inevitable conclusion is to replace the tumbler. I have been told ford do a kit to rebuild the tumbler but I dont know for sure.

I've been told its very common on all Fords..
My Mondeo won't unlock from the passenger side but will lock. Drivers side os all fine - atm!
My wife's Fiesta has the opposite problem - Drivers won't unlock etc...
Apparently ANY Ford key will LOCK and Ford car?! (of that shape key!). Its the unlock mechanism that is the important bit!
Ford definitely do a "barrel" replacement kit - you'll need a locksmith to assemble it to operate with your key.

Ford do indeed do a kit, have a look at www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm for building instructions. Yours might look a bit different but the basic components are all the same.

The key may not be the correct key for the door lock, the door locks or the ignition barrel may have been changed. All Ford keys lock any Ford vehicle (of the same key type) but only unlock the vehicle they are cut for.

hi
if you look on ebay for the remoco ford shop, they do a lock build to key service. send them a key and they build a door lock to suit for about £7 per door. the one shown on there site is for a fiesta, but they have an email address, so you can ask about your mondeo locks.
their shop is in stockport if you live nearby. next to stockport college.

update had a quick look on their site the £7 is for building the lock to suit, but you have to buy the lock off them as well.
