I wonder if any of you use software to track mot servicing times? i have a few cars in the household and a motorbike. i also help friends and family with their mots and servicing.
ive just recently gone over the mot date on one my cars. which made me think if there was something out there?
quick search showed mainly dealers software. looking on the net there is software for fleet companys that track when mots are due and servicing etc but costly.
are there any out there for households or even to add friends and family. that way i can set reminders for me to for mots, servicing.
anyone use the software?
recommend another way?

Diary function in "Outlook"??.
|
|
Microsoft Outlook could, but I prefer the paper and fridge magnet approach, backed up on the mass storage device known as the "Views of Rome" calendar secured to the back of the kitchen door.
Excuse me now, it's time to go and smash up some Spinning Jennys and seed drills....:-)

We put all important and recurring dates in red in the diary - and on Jan 1 just transfer them to the new one.
And I use Outlook, which syncs to the phone.

My local indy garage where we get both cars fettled sends out an MOT reminder about a Month before it's due. He really is a good guy. My car, despite being a Mondeo TDCI which regularly does 40k + per year and has so far racked up 140k has funnily enough abjectly failed to self-destruct, (as many on here would have you believe was an absolute inevitability.) In fact, nothing, at all, ever, has so far gone wrong with it. However, it's still a youngster really, my friend's TDCI has just achieved 225k and went through it's MOT last week with no issues.

i use the reminder sticky label that comes with the new MOT certificate. stick it on the windscreen op to tax disc , no excuse then who ever is driving !!!

And I use Outlook which syncs to the phone.
Me too. Works a treat when you set an alarm. Appears on the laptop and the mobile. Use it for insurance, and Vehicle Tax.

You can book it online from mid March, I understand.

Our garage uses VMM from Motasoft which sends out annual MOT reminders by SMS text, email and prints them for posting. It also allows live online booking from our own website directly into our MOT diary - highly recommended. www.motasoft.co.uk

MOT is on my phone as an anniversary with a warning 1 month in advance so I can ring up and book.
Service, the car has a little message and amber warning triangle come up which says "regular service due" when the ignition is switched on.

I second the use of any diary. I use Outlook for work which syncs with the phone frequently.

I once overlooked my MOT for about 6 months (luckily wasn't caught) and it ended up being due almost on my wedding anniversary. Which was handy, because I have a device which gives me an audible reminder that I'm a day or two late with the wedding anniversary again....

I use a very old and now obsolete PDA thingy - a Psion 5MX. The best aspect of it, to me, is the VERY loud alarms that can be set to draw your attention to any event. They can be set for immediate attention or XX days in advance and I find it very useful.
|
BT Yahoo calender - mark it on for a month before due and it sends me a reminder email.
|
If you want the personal assistant touch for all your dates and event reminders, then I would suggest
www.iwantsandy.com
Free and you get SMS and email of important dates/reminders

The DVLA send me an MoT reminder every year.
Well it is really the RFL, due 1st October, MoT is due about 8th Oct.
Tip if buying a brand new car (and you intend keeping it beyond 3 years)
- do not register it on 1st month - leave it a few days - in later years your MoT will be valid to renew the RFL on the 1st and you will have a few days to get the MoT sorted.

This is a very sore point at the moment.
Got a call from SWMBO on Tuesday morning as she was driving the Scenic to work. "Did you know my MOT ran out last week?"
>>insert some choice swear words here<<
Friendly garage squeezed it in first thing yesterday morning and it passed, thankfully (although picked up an advisory on the early signs of a leaking rear shock).
I've never done this before, and have always been quite intolerant of those who claim 'oversight', but it does genuinely happen.
No need for flashy software solutions. I've just added MOT dates to the list of stuff to be written onto next years calendar before we put it up.
