General - Exhaust section removal - Petel
General question please, not related to any make or model.

Can anyone please advise if they know of any off-the-shelf tools for separating exhaust sections on cars? This assumes that the sections are well aged/rusted, the owner does not have access to 2 or 4 post ramps, oxy gear etc and does not wish to smash everything to pieces with hammers.

Thank you.

I'm not aware of any tools and as most exhausts now seem to be of the 'flange' type, I can't see anyone coming up with one.

My method, if it's the female section that is being replaced is to use a hacksaw to cut along the length of the pipe and then peel the metal away until it comes apart. Easier if you can remove the complete exhaust from the car first. If it's the male section, I'd probably replace the whole system as I like an easy life!

An air chisel works wonders for clearing the compression slots then a blunt chisel soon rattles it off. Regards Peter

Look in the "Snap-on" catalogue.

Socket fitting exhausts are a pain if you want to re-use parts of the system. I had this problem on my old SAAB where I needed to reuse the female half, but had a broken stub of the male bit to remove.

I bought a metal cutting blade for my jigsaw, removed the platform on the saw, and made two saw-cuts from the inside, stopping before the outer section was reached. A small sharp cold chisel finished the job off without appreciable damage to the female section.

If it is the inner section of a join you need to retain, then hacksaw or careful angle grinding of the outer bit, then peel back.

If you are trying to preserve the outer section, cut the inner pipe off about 1/2" proud, then use something like big pliars or a pump wrench to twist up the stump of the inner section so that it winds itself a fraction smaller.

Many thanks to all for the input so far.

As per the original post, the object of the exercise is to " separate " the socket joint. I seek to do this by pulling the two sections apart, without the use of cutting or impact tools. I intend to make up tools for this and have several designs in mind but wished to establish that there is not already something available off-the-shelf.

My searches so far having proved fruitless, would be interested to hear if anyone in the Backroom knows of any such tooling, or has perhaps used suchlike in the past.
Thank you.
