2002 TDi - 'luggage comp. open' error message - Screwloose

The hatch lock switch circuit is faulty. Some versions suffer from water leaking into the tailgate and corroding the switch.

Thankyou for your reply. This could well be the problem as the rear washer jet appears not to be working. Do you know how to remove panel to expose switch, thankyou.

If there are no concealed fastenings; then it's probably on poppers - good luck.

[The washer leak is an old favourite.]

if there's recessed door closing grips on tailgate look inside them for phillips screws.(need to remove them to remove trim panel)

the motor can also fail in several ways. cracked connector for the plastic pipe and the metal pipe that runs through the motor body corroding/seizing/snapping.

there is an overhaul kit available - although dealers seem to be unaware until told that it exists. the kit includes new gears for the motor, gaskets, grease, pipe etc. Its about the same price as a used motor, but does give you as good as new - whereas you dont know the state of a used one.

I had this problem on a SEAT Leon. The rear washer froze up causing a washer pipe joint to
separate and leak onto the boot lamp. The joint (and the boot lamp) are behind the panel on the left hand side of the boot which encloses the seat belt mechanism. On a Leon the panel is held in place with 3 phillips screws and some lugs along the top. I would imagine a Golf IV is similar. Search the various VAG websites and you will discover that this is problem across the range (VW, Audi, SEAT).

This happened to my 2001 GT TDI.

The repair kit from the dealers is great, new pipe for the washer, gears and grease as mentioned.

A telltale sign of washer pipe breakage, is if the washer jet follows the wiper arm around, it should squirt in one vertical position!
