Hi all
I'm considering the purchase of an A4 TDI 1.9 03 model. A lot are advertised as having 130 bhp but with a 5 speed box. I had previously thought that in 03 to be a 130 it would have had a 6 speed box. (and that 5 speed were 115 or 100)
Can anybody give me an accurate breakdown on engine power at different stages and why some 130s may have a 5 speed box.
I will call Audi to make sure before buying but would like to know the background
Thanks

AFAIK 6 speed box was only introduced for the 2.0TDi. Friends had a 130 and it was a 5 speed box.

I think some of the later 130 models had 6 speed boxes (ie before the 2.0 140 was introduced)

I have trawled the net and haven't found a complete breakdown of power and gearbox, I think that sport models of that time had a 6 speed box and perhaps it was a marketing ploy to give the sport something different?

On nearly all VAG group vehicles, the engine power in kW is recorded on a paper label in the spare wheel well. A duplicate of this label (vehicle build codes) will be found on the front inside cover of the service booklet.
If this information is missing (it shouldn't be), look for a paper label on top of the cambelt cover which shows the engine build code. The engine power can be derived from this code (eg. AWX = 130 PS). Consult the Forum for more details if you need to use the engine build code.
1 BHP = 0.746 kW. 1 PS = 0.735 kW
659.

I think that info is also on the metal plate in the engine bay with all the serial numbers.
Also, the AWX code is 130PS with 210lb-ft torque, AVF is 130PS with 228lb-ft torque.
The AVF motor was usually fitted to variants with the 6-speed manual box.
Certainly 5-speed Passats (in S or SE trim) had the AWX, the Sport models got the AVF with 6-speed box.
The 115PS PD motor was superceded by the 130 a couple of years earlier if I remember right (i.e. around 2000 / 2001)

I had on '03 A4 Avant TDI Sport a few years back; it was a 130 but only had a five speed 'box - IIRC the 6 speed wasn't introduced until'04.
That shape A4 (known as 'B6) was available with the 1.9TDI in 100 and 130 PS outputs. Only distinguishing feature outside AFAIK is the red 'I' on the TDI badge for the 130 PS versions.
The recently replaced 'B7' A4 had the same engine but with a 105 PS output; the 130 was effectively replaced with the 2.0TDI in 140PS form. For the B7 all 1.9s were 5 speed, and the 2.0s 6 speed
