Has anyone tried to seal an Intake Manifold without dismantling it?

Just incase this is useful to anyone else, I had a bash at this.
I was having a really bad idle problem, where the revs would be embarassingly high and then stall unexpectedly, I tracked the problem done to the inlet manifold by spraying carb cleaner around air intake pipes and seals.
I bought some heat resistant silicone sealer. It's actually for sealing the glass on oven doors. As a test I put a bead of it and a bead of some normal bathrrom stuff on the top of the engine where it would get hot. I ran for a few weeks like that and neither of them ever softened too much, melted or smoked, so the special stuff was a waste of cash.
I applied it to the inlet manifold where it meets the engine but couldn't get in at it that well. Once it had set, it brought the revs down a bit and stopped it stalling which made it bearable until I had the money to get the inlet manifold gasket changed.
Changing the gasket cured the problem.

Hlyon,
How big a job was it to change the inlet manifold gasket, getting a slight ticking when revving from back of engine?
