If you've seen the TV ad...

Yes, are giving 5-yr warranty on Terios! Not sure other models on the range though.

An affordable true 4x4 - pity they never became a mainstream manufacturer.

They're part of Toyota these days.

Terios is sold as the Toyota Rush in some Asian and African markets. Is that sufficiently mainstream?

This offer must be replacing the £1000 reduction offered until the end of 2007. Test drove one as a potential Jimny replacement in January between offers. Still on the list of possibles because it is one of the few genuinely permanent 4WDs but the extra speed and space was offset by having no better a ride to the Jimny and it didn't seem worthwhile with £1000 back on the price. Having still got a 4WD YRV in the family, long-term reliability is now taken for granted with Daihatsus. Saving up for a Subaru diesel now.

How good is the Terios offroad? I will have need of an offroader later in the year (and when I say need I mean need in a 'will make it possible' sort of way) and I'm interested in these small 4x4s. Hill climbing isn't really an issue, but ground clearance and mud handling will be.

The new Terios is based on the floorpan of the OLD Rav4.

However the engine etc are different from the Toyotas - 1.5 Petrol - surely not enough BHP to pull that weight.

You can probably negotiate on a Hyundai Tucson close to the Terios price but the fact that the Terios has permanent 4WD and a mechanical locking centre differential makes it more useful off-road in my view than a part-time system sensing how to apportion drive. Ground clearance is nothing special on paper (200 mm ??) but the Terios has good arrival and departure angles and everything underneath is nicely tucked out of the way to minimise drag. For mud the best thing you can do is swop to appropriate M&S tyres with good self-cleaning properties and forget those fitted as standard. The engine is a stock Toyota unit but I don't know if it is much used in the UK. On-road it is perfectly adequate although a short test drive does confirm the reviewers' statements that it is a bit noisy. Depends what you compare it with. Note that Daihatsu is currently the only Japanese maker making a feature of the fact all their cars are built in Japan. I expect only Subaru can say the same. Daihatsu build all the Terios/Toyota Rush but more are apparently sold in Japan and Asia as Toyotas than Daihatsu.

The previous model Terios looks to have better ground clearance--am I right? Thanks for the advice on tyres. I agree the locking diff is a big draw. I have the possibility of a Landrover, so this may be academic, but I'm thinking ahead and anyway I'm not drawn to Landrover reliability, given the remoteness of where I'm going.

Youtube--great idea.

A Terios is not in the same league as a Land Rover -- no soft roader is. It is, however, a compact and more economical compromise. If you don't want to compromise on off-road ability and need a small vehicle, get a Jimny with its dual range. We have one in the UK but I work south of the Sahara and the only reason I don't have one there is because the payload is too low to comfortably carry the fuel I would need from time to time. My comments on tyres are based firstly on experience with Land Rovers, and later with many different types of 4x4. Leave the standard tyres behind when going into mud and water. On the Land Rover proving ground in Herefordshire it made the difference between getting a few hundred metres with a standard Defender and going the full tour without stopping on military-style mud tyres.

I appreciate the abilities of the Land Rover, but they are downright unpleasant at any kind of speed on the road in my experience and that's an important factor. The small size of the Terios is an advantage in many ways (including weight) and the Jimny is also under consideration, but I'm put off by the size--it barely beats a couple of mountain bikes plus trailers for load carrying. Incidentally that is a possibility too for the track (several miles long) I'm aiming to traverse, but it becomes a different prospect then. Decisions, decisions.
old shape terios. - tmmitzzie

Hi. I'm looking at buying an older shape (pre-2006 facelift) terios but I'm a wee bit confused about the drive system and theres not very much info around on this car so would you mind a cupla questions hopefully you can answer? I know that the new shape car has a centre diff - does this mean that there is no wind-up in the transmission? and if diff lock is engaged does wind-up become possible? and my last question is does the old shape car have a centre diff?

thanks in advance

a 4x4 newbie.

There's no transmission wind-up until the centre diff lock is engaged, not something you want to do on a dry road. Only if you get stuck in slippery conditions, or are about to would I say to engage it. Yes, the old Terios has a locking centre diff too.

I had an '02 Terios for about a year, and couldn't really recommend it if you have long journeys in mind, too bouncy and revvy.

Hi,

They're also doing a 5 year warranty on the Sirion up to the end of March (presumably to offset the introduction of the Subaru Justy, which is an identical car and comes with a 5 year warranty but is £500 more than the equivalent Sirion but has curtain air bags as standard). I suspect Daihatsu may well be moving over to standard 5 year warranties soon. Like most Japanese cars they tend to be fault free for at least the first 5 years (at least in terms of non-wear components), so Daihatsu won't be losing out!

You can see some of Terios's off road example videos in YouTube.
Some of them are quite impressive!

It doesn't have low range gears - but features a lockable central diff.

With the corect tyres a Terios will outperform a land Rover on most off road situations due to its lightness I have tried them both but it would never be able to carry the weight or tow what a Land Rover does.My old Vitara was superb off road far better than the Discovery that replaced it but it was a bit cramped with 6 people and the rigging gear in the Vitara.

I run a 2008 Terios and I do a lot of "green laning" etc. have taken it to Salisbury Plains on quite a few occassions and it surprises everyone each time! Yes it is limited by ground clearance but I have gained 20mm by changing tyre size with no problem at all.

It is also limted by power and because of this is doesn't like ascents much but I love it and have no intention of changing it.

However, I did have a problem recently with a faulty FRONT wheel bearing. It cost a flippin' fortune even to do it myself because of the parts prices rising and the dealers would NOT honour it under warranty because it has been "modified". By modifying, it has had a raised air intake fitted, K&N air filter (what adifference!) tyres changed and an extra recovery point added to front. NOT serious mods at all.

Have to say, bit pee'd off about that

I haven't read the Ts and Cs of the warranty, but if I were offering that warranty, I would probably stipulate that the car was not modified. if it were, I would think that "these are the mods I can see, what else has gone on?"

With Daihatsu pulling out of the UK who will honour the warranty perhaps Toyota
