Should I buy one ? - lucyandneil
Any particular reasons why I shouldn't buy one? 53 plate, 10k miles.

Cheers

£2995. Obviously I'll be attempting to knock this down a little.

id only give £1995 on a good day. They really have no charm at all.

I find them quite sweet.

However, I don't want my wife and child breaking down in the middle of nowhere.

Any problems likely to arise due to the whole Chevy takeover thing?

They arent bad cars. I owned a top-spec S reg which I did 55k in just two years.
Only fault it had was a failed alternator at 44k. Aside from that, very reliable and a joy to own. As has been said, thats strong money though, you can find cheaper.

My Gran insists on buying a new one of these every year. Her first was a T plate.

Absolutely terrible cars - horrific bodyroll when cornering at anything more than 10mph, wheezy ashmatic 800cc engine which is incapable of keeping up with traffic if you leave town, infact devoid of any merit at all.

Buy a Ford Ka or something.

You really have to own one to like them. Mine grew on me. I had air con, cd autochanger and all the basics in mine - back then, few cars were as well equipped at the price.

I cant say I ever thought the handling was sharp, but it is acceptable when you drive sensible.

Yes the engine isnt very powerful but they are willing and return an average of over 50 mpg without too much effort. There is also a 1.0 which is faster if thats what someone wants. I never had trouble keeping up with the flow of traffic, I even bounced it off the rev limiter in 5th at an indicated 100 mph on the M25 once.

My sister also owned one, a T-reg and she loved it also, racking up 35k in 4 years with no problems whatsoever.

Sorry but it is good at what it is designed to be - the Ka is rust-prone, cheaply made and thirsty for a small car, not to mention pig ugly. Not to mention the ancient rattly engine they stuck in them. Ive driven many of them and hated each one with passion.

Per Car-by-Car section:

Timing belt and tensioner pulley replacement at 40k miles or 4 years whichever comes first is crucial. Make sure that this has been done. See the evidence yourself.

As has been said, from what you've told us - overpriced by about £1000.

Seem to remember Autocar managed to roll one over while reversing at a surprisingly low speed a few years ago.

Thats ok, My wife is such a nervous driver, she won't be going very quickly forwards, let alone backwards.

Aren't some of these (prematurely?) scrapped due to lack of spares?

I can't find a link anywhere, so it might just be my imagination...

But have a look here just in case:

Is safety paramount to you? It's such a small, lightweight car. Does the 03 model have any airbags? ABS?

I agree with Nickdm. EuroNCAP gives it 3 stars, or 3 with one crossed through depending on which model you look at:
