Does anyone know of insurence companies which give discounts if you hold the IAM advanced certificate?

Admerial / elephant have started to ask if you have IAM certs, don't know what discount they offer though

Interesting question.

I have been an IAM member since August 1986, and for the last seven years, have been driving a company car.

My intention next spring, when the lease expires on my utterly reliable, much enjoyed, Vectra GSi Estate, is to take the dosh alternative, and buy it, or alternatively to buy a one year old, or new personally imported, Volvo S60 T5 SE.

My one concern, before committing what will be my own cash, up front, is whether I will have the car I desire, only to be crucified for insurance: Colleagues and friends similarly exiting company car schemes in their droves are finding that even with a letter from the company car insurers, they are not being offered full NCD entitlement, and in some cases, no NCD entitlement at all.

Ideally, I would like NCD fully, AND an IAM discount, but feel I'm most unlikely to succeed.

Any comments from real life experience, please?

Cheers,
Steve

I can only recommend that you approach your Company car scheme regulator (be that anywhere from you accounts dept. to your Personnel dept. - sorry current bulls**t PC says HR - ) to get confirmation of NCB and then checkout DirectLine and Tesco.

Find out who insures your company cars and ask them for a quote.

Steve,
Last week I had renewal notice with 12% increase - I called IAM Select Insurance - 0345-697619 - they got me £90-00 cheaper quote from the SAME insurer and £50-00 of second car.
I am paying less for both cars than 12 months ago for the same cover.
They have sharpened up since I last tried them.

chears matt35.

I do plan on getting a quote from IAM select but when I phoned them they said they could not quote me without my membership number, which i have not yet recieved as i only passed about a week and half ago. I just hope it comes before my premium is due on the 22nd of June.

Steve,
Congratulations on your pass!
I suggest you phone IAM HQ and get your number by phone - the IAM Select will ask you for a copy of your membership - I am sure HQ will fax this to you or to IAM Select.
Have you thought about becoming an Observer? You really begin to gain experience!

Regards,

Matt35.

Thanks Matt!
I never thought about phoning the IAM, i will do that if it doesnt come in the next few days. As for becoming an observer, i may consider it in the future. Are you one? Whats it like? do u enjoy it?. Anyway need to get the A levels out the way first!

Cheers.

Congrats Steve on moving up to next rung on "driving ladder".

There are of course more "rungs". Observer, Senior Observer, RoADA, HPC etc. The important bit is to keep learning - I have done those and am still learning.

Morning Steve,
It is very enjoyable, keeps you up to scratch with your driving and you get a lot of pleasure when you get a call from someone who has just passed.
I did IAM Senior Observer and gor RoSPA Gold last year - Silver the year before.
Maybe Trevor can comment further on HPC as I have thought about it?
Regards,
Matt.

HPC - not cheap, but well worth while.

I am saving for my "Silver".

John Lyon is brilliant.

Now, you use your own car - so some are obviously more suitable than others, BUT I saw a guy going in his 205 Diesel.
I would recommend any car where you can FEEL fairly quick response to power-on - you will be using it!

Trevor,
Thanks for info - would they laugh at X Type 2.5 AUTO? I have been checked out on manual with IAM but have automatic box.
By the way - one of the links on the HPC website confirms why so many German managers drive BMW - they don't know how to spell Porsche.

Matt.

Jag X - brilliant motor. Much more use than my "toy".

WELL up for it with HPC.

Yours must be fairly new - are you happy with it? Or too soon to tell?

It is a great car - I opened it up a bit in France last month and it runs like a Swiss watch..had it since October 2001 in BRGreen.
I just wondered if HPC would laugh at the auto box - it is pretty sharp in S setting.
