private plate V788 issue - rossie

Hi, wondered if anyone could advise. I have just purchased a private plate No and have been sent a V788 by the previous owner. The retention certificate expires however in 2 days time. I phoned DVLA and they told me that this is'nt such a problem as it will still be processed.
However, if I send it away to DVLA for an extention, due to the fact that i do not wish to assign it to avehicle just now, it seems to me that the retention certificate will remain with the previous owner, and be posted to them and not me.

I might be readiong this wrong but does anyone know?

If I am down as the nominee only, there is no allocation for my address and it seems the entitled owner will remain, ie not me?
