06 130i M-Sport Engine Tappet Noise - Recalcitrant
Hi all,

Can anyone shed some light on the following...

I have a 2006 130i M-Sport with 14,500 miles on the clock. When the engine is cold, or if it has been driven a short distance, left, then started up some time later, there is an intermittant tappeting noise coming from the engine. The first time i called BMW service out and it didn't make the noise. It went to my local dealer who changed the oil and couldn't find any problem. Since then it has been doing it on an intermittant basis, but ALWAYS when the engine is cold. It's been to my dealer FIVE times now and it is there as i write this. The last time it made the tappeting noise, BMW service came out (again) and confirmed it was the hydraulic tappets. Is there a problem with the engine as i'm worried that it's going to need an engine rebuild of some sort. It's still under warranty but it would be nice to know if my dealer is trying to avoid the cost of such an expensive option. Anyone have any knowledge of what causes the noise or had a similar experience?

Hi welcome to the BR. Deleted the post over in Discussion. Congratulations on being better than most posters in actually including the year and engine in the subject line, many veterans can't get that right !

Many engines exhibit a slight tappety sound upon the first start from cold because the oil drains from the hydraulic tappets though it shouldn't last more than a few seconds.

Some engines employ a non-return valve to retain some oil in the area of the head(s), not sure if this is the case with your BMW.

You could ask a BMW independant specialist for an opinion.

The noise often lasts litterally until the engine has been running for about 5 - 10 mins. I may go to another dealer if this one fails to find anything. Cheers.

Could be oil filter drain back. Get the dealer to change the oil filter and replenish the engine with new oil.

This is not unique to the 3.0 litre engine, as my son has exactly the same problem on a 2006 325 E90 series coupe.

The noise is horrendous and is caused by air getting into the hydraulic tappets, it has been back to the main dealer, but to date nothing has been done about it. He has an engineer from BMW coming to check over the vehicle tomorrow.

Hi

If you go to www.e90post.com and do a search-"metallic ticking noise" you will see that there have been a lot of probs with out of spec valve lifters. Many of the forum members have had all 24 valve lifters replaced under warranty. Get in there quick before warranty expires.

Just a sample post from one post, a copy of his warranty invoice:( I think PUMA is head office):-

Removed valve cover and removed exhaust CAM to check for unusual wear. None found. Created PUMA case and they advised replacement of exhaust rockers and hydro push rods. Replaced components. Reassembled engine and test drove. Vehicle is still ticking. Replied to PUMA and was advised to replace push rods, rockers and levers. Removed intake cam and checked bearing surfaces, all OK. Replaced intake side push rod lifters, rockers and intermediate levers with blocks. Timed engine and reassemble. Test drove vehicle, ticking noise is no longer present. Calibrated valvetronic end stops and cleared faults, vehicle OK. Puma also recommended oil change. Performed oil and filter change.

>>>found the exact noise from the forum on youtube: e36 323i 96 ticking.>>>

The ticking you refer to with an E36 323i would have no connection whatsoever with the noise (loud metallic banging), that is being experienced on the latest E90 series 2.5 & 3.0 litre engines, where the only effective cure is the replacement of the whole cylinder head with a totally modified and upgraded head.

Hello

Did you manage to get to the bottom of your problem?

I have a 2006 BMW Z4 with a 3.0 engine. I have reported the same ticking noise coming from the engine at start up. It does not do it everytime but will occur at start up or after short journies when the car is left and started again.

The noise is awful and certianly not normal. It can be a bit embassing too sat at traffic lights.

After 2 visits to the dealer they are now replcaing the Hydraulic Valve Lifters. Luckily its still covered by the warranty. I really hope this sorts out the problem.

I would be interested to hear of anyone else with the same problem.
