I've got the original cassette player in my 1999 vectra. I got a Sony cd for it. Will it be a straight swap or will I need some wire looms? Also will I loose digital display anywhere fitting in an after market one?
Thanks.

You will need a "connection adapter kit" (£6-£15) and you will lose the screen as well.
|
Might be better to by a Vaux CD player off e-Bay, though re adaptors Google 'Autoleads'.
|
The Vauxhall wiring will have an ISO connector - the Sony stereo likewise, and therefore plug and play. All you normally have to do is cut / disconnect the red and yellow wires on one of the iso connectors and swap them around. ie, red to yellow, and yellow to red - otherwise the radio presets will be lost each time you take the key out the ignition. You might be able to also buy an adapter so that the Sony stereo 'talks' to the cars display. You will have to update the time/date manually though as the factory fit stereo would have previously done that via the RDS signal from an FM radio station.

Got a little problem now with this...
I went to put my stereo in and found the aerial connection isnt straight forward, I need an adaptor. As it was 5 o'clock and dark I deciced to get the adaptor tomorrow when I know all the shops would be open.
I unplugged my cd player and put the vectra cassette player back in. On the display it came up 'safe'. I thought this was just telling me something all the lines of the player needs its code again. When I looked at the audio manual it says that when the display says 'safe' it mean a code has been tried more than 10 time and has blocked itself???
I never even entered one code, all I done was plugged it back in and turned it on.
Is there anything I can do or is the cassette player now (I'll use the technical term)k'nackered?
Thanks for any help.

if you have not put the code in before it is simple just switch it off hold down AS button and switch on put your code in and off you go

You have to enter the coding sequence. eastenddoy's info is almost correct. He omitted to mention that the key also has to be in the ignition, and turned to position 1.
Code Entry as Follows:
Turn Off Stereo
Switch On Ignition (No Need To Start Engine)
Press & Hold Preset " AS " and Switch Radio On -
Display Shows " SAFE " And Then Shows " 10 - - - - "
Press preset " 1 " repeatedly for 1st Digit
Press preset " 2 " repeatedly for 2nd Digit
Press preset " 3 " repeatedly for 3rd Digit
Press preset " 4 " repeatedly for 4th Digit
If the correct code number is now shown
Press & Hold Preset " AS " Until the Unit Beeps
Each time you get it wrong, the waiting time increases before you can attempt re-entering the code.
see www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=46...3 for more details.
As for the aerial adaptor, you'll need a PC5-27 - eg, tinyurl.com/2mqqx7

Thank you very much for the info. Got cassette/ radio player going again. I'll get the adaptor later today.
Looks like I'm going to loose the bottom half off the display while cd player is on. It comes back again when I turnned it off though.
There was 3 blocks at the back (connected to the vectra) 2 which my loom plugs straight into, and a 3rd which was slighly bigger. Any idea what this on is for? The cd/radio worked without it.
Thanks again for all your help. Very much appreciated.

Just looking on ebay and there one there that needs to be recoded. Would that be exspensive or is there a trick to recode it? :)

On my lovely green '99 Vectra with a CDR500 the 3rd block is for CD autochanger control.

IIRC, you have to snip or earth a certain wire to prevent this. If I can find the info on vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk I'll report back. Unless someone else knows in the mean time?
With some stereo's you can also get an adapter so that the steering wheel controls and dash display still work with the non factory fit stereo.
|
Does anyone know if a Vauxhall CDR500 player would be straight swap for the cassette player? Would it keep the display and would I still be able to use the steering controls for it?
Cheers.

I'm 99% sure a CDR500 will plug and play. However, you might have to change the display setting from 10 digit to 8 (or vice versa). Piece of cake to do though, just a couple of button pushes.
Just had to do a forum search to remind myself.
With the Ignition on
Press and hold the 4 & 6 buttons on the set
Then switch on the radio keeping the 4 & 6 pressed
The display will show 10-digit which will then toggle to 8-digit, or vice versa

Cheers DD.
Dont know whether to get the adaptor for my Sony or buy a CDR500 (with code) from ebay.
Wanted: CDR 500, can pay £50 for one with a code ;-)

I don't have a CDR500 but I do have a CCR600 plus glovebox filling CD autochanger surplus to requirements, removed from my lovely green vectra on purchase. It should be a simple install if your Vectra already has the CD changer wiring in situ, i wouldn't bother trying if it doesn't. Mail me at the address in my profile if interested.
