03 TDCi poor start and flashing glow plug light - Red Baron
Drove 70 miles yesterday. No problems.

Tried to start car today. Engine fires but would not idle. Stalled.
Tried again. Same result.
Tried again, held throttle, engine ran, sounded like a bag of spanners, blue and white smoke. Turned engine off.
Started engine again as above. Difficult to rev engine above 2000rpm, lots of blue and white smoke out of the exhaust. Glow plug light flashing.

Went for a short drive. Engine hesitant/spluttered at about 2000rpm before revving higher. Very lumpy running of engine, but would idle.

Turned engine off and restarted. Engine idles okay and revs fine up to the red line (in neutral).

Drive 60 miles home. Engine sounds okay, glow plug light flashing all the time, do not have 130 horses under the bonnet. Definitely feels like there is no turbo. Car cannot acellerate on motorway inclines.

I have had the car for 4 years. In those 4 years the glow plug light has come on some 5 times, but has always gone away on an engine restart.

Any ideas guys?

White smoke could be water in the fuel, did you fill up during the 70 mile run?

Otherwise a trip to the dealer is required, could be half an hour reprpgramming an injector or could be more serious.

You need the codes read.

Last filled up (Total diesel) three days ago. Did 50 miles before yesterdays 70.

Hope that Dealer will be able to read codes tomorrow.

Could, what may be an injector problem, cause the engine management to limit power somewhere? I'm hoping that the turbo is not damaged.

Yep, I have had one case in 125k miles of the g/p light coming on while driving, at around 70k, the power was severely limited, the dealer reprogged one injector, took 20/30 mins.

hi welcome to the mondeo pain in the backside code
Your problem is your injectors have tripped out of time. no big deal just a pain in the backside!
You have to go to a garage that has the ford soft ware to reset the injector timing about 15 mins and £40 later you should be fine. the only thing is you will never know when its going to do it again could be 20 000 or 200. when you ask what as caused it they will give you all kinds of bull crap but the one they leave out is that fords get their injection systems from toys r us. i speak from experience must have had mine done half a dozen times. friends to. i wont be having another diesel ford. petrols dont seem to suffer

A good indpendant garage will have the kit for reading fault codes & re-coding injectors. possible turbo failure or injector. cam & crank sensors common too. needs a code read first. Just find a garage that has experience with these & it won't be too bad. Too many dealers put boy's on the job making hard work of it. may be worth a visit to a reputable diesel specialist.

Car into garage today.

Fault code P2337 in the PCM only. No other fault codes. P2337 - Cylinder 2 knock control limit attained.

The dealer established that a software upgrade was available; Part Number 2S71 - 12A650 - CG. This update addresses the following items: HEC (instrument cluster), Hesitation/stumble on acceleration.

I think that they also programmed a later calibration for the ICU; Part number 2S7Q - EE.

Cost £115 in total.

They also said that the injector calibration was the final one and should the injector wear to the point where it moves out of the programs' calibration range that a new (i.e., 4 new) injectors would be required.

Well, we shall soon see whether I have simply been unlucky with injector 2 or whether the others are going to follow suit soon.

Oh, and the new doors that were fitted 12 months ago due to the sealant/rust issue are leaking water through the membrane sealant. Marvelous.

I tell you, its a good job that I have one of those reliable italian cars to fall back on!!!!!

That is the repairer re-fitting the old membranes, take it back and insist that new membranes are fitted.
