Hi, has anyone got a shortcut that doesn't involve dismantling the dash. Fuses are ok

Which bulbs are you looking to replace, the instrument cluster area or ancillaries such as heater control panel lights?
I think a 95 model has bulbs but facelift models(with electronic mileometer etc) has non replaceable lighting according to the haynes manual.
TBH, and I haven't done one, the instrument cluster doesn't look too difficult to remove. The tricky bit looks like the steering wheel with airbag.

Instrument cluster, not the facelift model. From replies will have to get the wheel off and do it! Thanks

I remember changing the instrument panel bulbs on my '97 Xantia several years ago and it was relatively easy. The only complication is that the steering wheel has to come off, and therefore so does the airbag.

If all the bulbs have gone out, and did so suddenly, then pull the dimmer out of the steering column shroud and short the wires out on the back of it - this may well put the lights back on - it's not unknown for the resistor to fail.
Getting the wheel off is not bad - set it at 90° before you shut the engine down then you can reach both the air bag screws without needing to turn the wheel. Heed the advice in Haynes about the air bag....!

Thanks, will try this.... and get back to you.

hi
i am just letting you know an old and and very good way first is to always check the panel in the footwell or some cars the lower panel by you knees take off first you can nearly always get to 80% of bulbs around the speedos with with nimble fingers, or some times i make a tool out of an old socket works a treat on my 02 mondeo. i can change a bulb inthe revcounter in about 10 mins

There's only one way to do it on a Xantia, and that's by taking the panel out. Actually not that bad, but you do have to remove the steering wheel, so you can remove the column shrouds, so you can get access to the panel screws.

Surprise, surprise, fiddling with the dimmer worked! No need to remove airbag, stering wheel and dashboard, thank heavens. Thank you for the advice. BillT
