My daughter lives on Jersey, Channel Islands. Roads are extremely narrow in parts.
She needs a 7 seater car for 3children and two large dogs - so needs boot space as well.
Most four track car are enormous and wide - too big for Jersey.
Can anyone suggest the NARROWEST 7 seater which would give the above space.
Will consider new or recent second-hand.
Thanks in anticipation of help.
Liz.

Do the two dogs get a seat each? Why does she need a 7 seater for 3 kids or am I missing something here?
Re your question, I seem to remember seeing some sort of Japanese import thingy that carried seven but was very thin but can't remember what it was called!

Imported Toyota and Mitsubishi MPVs from Japan are narrower than regular UK imports.

Thank you for all suggestions and replies I have passed them on.
Bobby G - in answer to the question "do the dogs get a seat" - a downside of living on Jersey is lots of visiting friends and family to drive around as well as the children and dogs!!

Have a look at Parkers website, which gives dimensions for all cars, both new and secondhand. You don't specify a budget, but if you're looking at the lower end of the market it is worth looking at imported used Japanese people carriers. Because the width and length are factors in how much road tax you pay there, the Toyota Lucida/Emina/Estima which are Jap' market versions of the old model Previa are a usefull 5 inches or so narrower than the UK market Previa. .

I would guess a Grand Scenic or Mazda 5.

The narrowest 7 seater I'm aware of is the Nissan Serena, not available new now and prone to toppling over as my friend's did on Barra in the Outer Hebrides.
|
The Touran?
|
They are a bit old now but a friend ran a Peugeot 504 seven seater estate until a couple of years ago. Seemed narrower than a modern MPV. Mercedes and Volvo also had seven seater estate options. All are usually relaible but hard to find now. Zero depreciation though!

To me the Mitsu Grandis looks narrower than the competition, but agree that the smaller MPV's e.g. Mazda5 etc are probably even narrower.
The Toyota Estima or Lucida were the Jap imports that were narrower than the Previa.

"The Touran?"
No space for a Yorkshire Terrier, never mind two big dogs, once the back seats are up.

Isn't there a 7 seater Zafira
|
If you could manage with 6 seats and being narrow is essential.

just to add, the electric version would look ideal for Jersey

All Zafiras are 7 seaters

These are revolting machines, and are to be avoided at all costs!!

the reason that we got our Mitsub Grandis was because it was narrow but still had a big boot. It is almost exactly the same dimensions as a BMW 5 Series (e39) estate. The rear seats are usable but if you try and put 3 child seats across the middle it can be a bit of a squeeze. (Careful of the costs of ownership, although there is now a £200 3-year service plan available. Oh and they are noisy old things from the VAG PD engine)

There is a 7 seat version of the Fait Doblo - now it is ugly in the extreme.
But it is cheap - in comparison to other 7 seaters and is 1.7m wide - 5' 8" in old money

Land Rover Defender Station Wagon is 1790 mm wide = 70 inches.
Seats 7 with optional third row rear seats. Plus the higher driver's seat gives a better view over the hedgerows.
Defenders are a bit of acquired taste, though.

A Toyota Corolla Verso is just 1770mm wide.

When I was a child the contemporary solution to this was a Mini van with the floor covered in some foam rubber to fit. Sometimes there were up to ten of us back there. Only safety feature was to brace yourself against a fat kid. Wouldn't be allowed now of course. ;-)

There's also a stretch version of the VW Caddy recently seen in Auto Bild - worth checking whether there's a RHD version offered in the UK.
Dolbo not a bad idea - a car based in Jersey won't cover long distances, it'll be cheap to run. Check is it galvanised like other Fiats to help prevent premature corrosion from the salt air.
