2000 HDi Estate - Rear suspension sinks overnight - gamecock9
I have a Xantia HDI Estate, year 2000, mileage 131,000. It sinks at rear when parked overnight or occasionally for shorter periods. New rear outer spheres cured it temporarily, but all spheres are new and fluid has been changed. The front is not a problem. Any ideas, please?

somebody with more technical knowledge may correct me but I think it's supposed to do that, certainly my son's 1996 one does that and it has never been commented on when it has been serviced

I had a new one around 1996. It always used to "settle" when parked. In fact you had to be careful not to let it overhang high kerbs and the like as it would sometimes drop slowly on to them. Its best trick though was in deep snow. When other "normal" cars were getting stuck you could just raise it up onto its highest setting and drive out of the deep stuff at low speed.

By 97 they had been fitted with an anti-sink valve that maintained pressure when the car was parked. On restart the back would sink briefly, then come back up as the system pressurised. While it was doing this it did funny things to the brakes so that if applied they would suddenly snap on until the prsessure had lifted the rear suspension to working height. A good Citroen specialist should know about this component.

This is my third Xantia Estate, and I have only had slight sinking previously. This one goes right down to the bump stops, but the fault has only started recently. I had a year with no problem.

This would surely suggest a problem with the rear anti-sink valve?

I have the same model and while it needs a few seconds after start to stabilise the ride height it only drops on the stops when left over an extended period.
