Just had a brief look around a brand new Mazda 2 Sport.
Tried to sit in it , but even with the seat right back, my knees were against the steering column. 31" inside leg isn't so long.
Interior room compared to SWMBO Getz seemed very tight.
Generally looked very attractive though- and it isn't even a VW ;>)

You need a 6 not a 2.

Perhaps you are not! Look at roomier cars, is the obvious answer.

Sorry for not being clearer. I assumed that I ought to be able to fit in better. Autocar and other journals do not mention my problem.
Presumably I could have adjusted the steering column and perhaps the seat base.
Was not my car and the proud owner had just taken delivery.

Yonkety yonks ago I used to walk past a car showroom which contained a black Fiat X19. It was there for a few weeks and I gradually persuaded myself that this was my next car. Having finally plucked up the financial courage I strolled in one day with an open wallet. Only to be totally gutted when I couldn't fit behind the wheel ! ( and no it was not a girth issue before you lot start ! )
Probably a lucky escape on reflection !

I wonder if the driver's seat was not set to maximum height, it goes up and down by quite a lot. We recently bought a Mazda 2 TS as a second car, I have the same inside leg measurement and fit in very comfortably. In fact, interior space in front is very much on par with our other car, an Audi A3 Sportback, and the space in the back is also perfectly reasonable. All in all, from early impressions, it is a surprisingly nice small car for the money.

Years ago I once sat in a (not sure... bluebird?) anyway my knees were jammed under the steering wheel and splayed.
Salesman, "no problem, it adjusts", unfortunately it only went down.
Similarly once sat in a small Citroen and found my foot covering two pedals. Short of putting on some old `winkle pickers`and pressing the pedals with the tips, there was no way I could safely drive it.

Old Mazda 2 had quite a bit of space in the drivers seat length wise, no room left of the clutch so useless for me. Sad to hear they have made an even worse job of the new one.
I sat in a new corsa and apart from the weird angle of the steering wheel it had a nice amount of room, shame its got none in the back at all though. The reviews on this car are totally misleading like most of them IMHO.
|
Have no experience of the old Mazda 2, but the new one certainly has a reasonably sized footrest to the left of the clutch, which seems to be an exception for a car from this class.
|
Actually does anybody with a new shape Mazda2 have any running reports about how the car is in terms of mpg/noise/comfort/brakes? The magazine road tests seem to say it's a bit noisy. Also there was another post where a potential purchaser was concerned about braking distances following a magazine report. Thanks!

I sat in one and seemed to fit OK (6ft 4 and 33 inside leg) So maybe you didn't adjust the seat properly. Non exsistent room in the back though with me in the driver's seat. If more room is the answer then maybe a Honday Jazz or Nissan Note could be the answer (both could seat me, behind me if you get my drift) I also thought the Renault Clio was very roomy for that size of car

I fancied one of the last old Beetles, a Beetle GT IIRC.
I couldn't get it into third gear.
With my foot on the clutch, my left knee was where the gearlever needed to be. I couldn't put my knee anywhere else because of the steering wheel.
I'd gone with cash available - result - one very disappointed salesman.

Our Mazda2 TS achieves just under 40mpg in mixed driving, but it is still under 1k miles and the consumption seems to be improving. Noise is much less than the magazine road tests suggest. At 70mph there is no need to raise one's voice when talking, and in comparison to our other/previous cars, much the same as in an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDI, and much less than in a 2001 Honda Civic 1.6. Comfort is similar to the Honda Civic, and so are the brakes. I recently had to drive an almost new Mitsubishi Colt 1.3, and the Mazda2 is light years ahead in every aspect.
For some reason, WhatCar? seems to dislike the Mazda2. However, one should not pay much attention: In fact, Mazda2 has just been named World Car of the Year ahead of the new Ford Mondeo and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, see www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23727251/

My 03 Fiesta was the same - no room to put your foot next to the clutch and a pain (literally) in the leg resting on the clutch as the footwell air vent was blowing right onto my calf.
Plenty of room in the old one (Mazda 2/Fiesta) though - I'm 6'3" and I couldn't drive with the seat right back!

One of the magazines (Autocar I think) is running a 2 on long-term test and says it's difficult to start from cold. That shouldn't be the case with modern fuel injection so I would imagine it's a fault peculiar to that car.
But it's a possibility for elder daughter's next car (cheaper than another Yaris) so has anyone else had the same problem?

No problems with cold or warm starts in my experience. The engine is an improved version of a well-tested Mazda design and my feeling is that the 1.3 has much in common with the 1.4 in the Mazda 3, about which there seem to have been no complaints. Also, the Mazda 2 has been on sale since April last year in Japan and minor teething problems, if any, should have been ironed out.

Hi
Well yesterday went to see the Mazda 6 with my son who is 6.7 and size 16 in shoes taking up most floor spaces and of big build ( I am being nice there ) he sat in the passenger seat not enough leg room very tight due to the drop down locker ,
so the sales man asked me to look at the Mazda 2 I was laughing but my son said there was more leg room due the drop down locker being smaller and not as low down .
Head room was ok in both cars

Sorry forgot to add my son has never been able to drive due to the fact not one driving school has a car he can fit behind the wheel sardines in a can come to mind
