Yesterday accidently put about 40p worth unleaded into the tank before noticing mistake. Guys in petrol station said as long as I added loads of diesel (I added £30) nothing to worry about. Car ran OK yesterday. Have I done any lasting damage ?

Nothing to worry about John. 40P is insignificant and you did exactly what I would have done in the same circumstances.

Thank you for putting my mind at peace.

Now repeat after me:
"Don't use the Green Pump!!!"

I did a similar thing with my 1.9TDi Galaxy in Switzerland - and was told by locals in the garage, that in winter they frequently put a litre of petrol into every tank full of diesel. I think (though my french was struggling at this stage) - that it helps with the viscosity in very cold weather?

Just be thankful of the recent price rises then, since 40p now only buys you about a thimble full!

When I was looking on the internet about what I could have done to the engine I read that in colder countries in winter that they often added petrol (about 10% and often more) to their diesel to stop it freezing). I think this is OK with older diesel engines but not the newer ones.
And yes I feel really stupid and will take more care next time !!!

The old hands in the London Taxi trade always swore by putting a little petrol in their cabs during the winter to help quicker firing in cold mornings. Not sure of the truth in it and it should be borne in mind that this was in the days of very basic type of engines. Of course putting any diesel into a petrol car is a disasterous!

Now we know whay the Volkswagen ads used to try to remind you that they're diesel - it's not because of the vast number of miles they can do to a tank, it's to stop people going unleaded!
