Nice cars - getting very sought after, good ones are appreciating too.....
BUT.. They seem to attract the attentions of the grubby end of the trade like flies to a... picnic.
Take an VW expert with you to give it an end-to-end check. Crash damage; ringing; bodgery; alterations and rattly timing chain. [Gearbox end on these.] They're pigs to work on, so everything that goes wrong costs a fortune to fix.
Check absolutely everything; every line of it's history with dealers; previous owners and HPI. No history - walk away.

My friend bought a Golf III VR6 2 years ago. Obviously not such a classic but maybe not that different - similar engine / running gear. Very easy & cheap to work on & mega reliable. He paid 1700 for it with 96k on, & has only had to do 1 brake line & the clutch in 2 years - maybe a cheaper alternative? Still plenty of thrashed rubbish about though so watch out

Our secretary at work used to have one.
A nice car but the headgasket went at several hundred pounds to sort out, and I'm talking about a few years ago, now.
She said the clutch was very heavy. It was really her husbands car but he used to go to work on the train so she was left the Corrado to drive to work in.

The clutch shouldn't be heavy on a VR6 unless there is something wrong with it.
They're good cars but they are old complicated cars. As long as you accept that you are buying into an old car which will need constant tlc and not a new Honda you should be OK.

Owned a 2-0L 16V version some time ago. Getting rare now, great cars with nice handling ride set-up. Agree with earlier comment, have a terrible reputation for being stolen, thrashed and generally abused. Sold mine and got a letter from the new owner's insurance company, to check details, as the car had been stolen off him within two weeks. So buyer beware, any doubts walk away!

just sold one after running it for four years. Gutted but not practical enough for my current needs . Best car iv'e had by miles. 30+mpg and the noise -- oh the noise. Now very cheap for the performance and looks.

I had a 16v from new - major electrical problem with the loom rubbing against the block causing all sorts of shorts. I recall the dealer saying it was a common problem but don't think it was a recall.
